Into the Sideways World
The whole world was heading for war when Manny Weaver and I went through a ‘grey hole’ to another world.
Till then, I didn’t believe in magic. Fairies, witches, magic spells, strange lands with talking animals, monsters with three heads and potions to turn you into a giant?
Even when I was very little, I knew all that stuff wasn’t real. Then I encountered Manny, and the strange animal we called a ‘cog’, and the brother who I’d never met because he died before I was born. I rode through a lightning storm on a flying jet ski, and lived in a World Without War.
And so now, if you ask me if I believe in magic? Let’s just say I’m not so sure.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2019Alfie Monk is 11 years old. He lives with his mother in a secluded house in the middle of some woods in northern England. A town is nearby, and it’s been growing steadily closer.
Alfie is 11, and he’s been 11 for more than a thousand years. He and his mother broke open two life pearls provided by his father and mixed it in their blood. They’re not immortal, but their bodies did stop aging.
They meet two children who live nearby and who are themselves 11 years old. Roxy lives with her disabled mother. Aidan lives next door, and his family has just moved to the area. When Alfie’s mother dies in a fire (never-aging bodies aren’t immune or resistant to death by accidents, like fire and drowning), Aidan and Roxy have to make two decisions. Do they help Alfie? And do they believe his story about being a thousand years old?
“The 1000-Year-Old Boy” by British children’s writer Ross Welford tells the story pf Alfie, Aidan and Roxy, and what a cracking good story it is. Aidan and Roxy have to help Alfie navigate normal life and help him escape of another of the “Never-Dead” on the scene – Aidan’s Uncle Jasper. When Alfie decides to find the one-remaining life pearl, the one he and his mother hid long ago and the one that will start the aging process again, Aidan and Roxy begin the adventure of a lifetime.
Welford is the author of three other children’s novels: “Time Travelling with a Hamster,” “What Not to Do If You Turn Invisible,” and “The Dog Who Saved the World.” He was a business editor and writer and television program producer before turning to the writing of children’s stories. He lives in London.
“The 1000-Year-Old Boy” is a delightful story, full of twists and turns, and describing what friendship truly means.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2020This is a wonderful story for kids and adults alike. Did you ever think it would be good to live forever? You won’t after listening to this book. Lots of great ideas, historical detail, atmospheric renderings of the life in northeast of England, the values of deep friendship, and an exciting plot. Do get this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!
I absolutely loved this book because it is adventurous as well as heart-warming. It is written in the perspective of two boys, one who is a regular boy called Aiden, and the other who is 1,000 years old! Aiden meets his new next door neighbour, an outgoing girl called Roxy, after he moves house because of money problems. She takes him to a strange, bordered off house in the woods behind his back yard, where they see a 'witch' and her son. When a tragic event happens to the house, Alfie, the 1,000 year old boy, is found hiding in an unexpected place! Together, the threesome set off on a journey they will never forget, and they get in to a whole heap of trouble! I enjoyed this book and could not put it down... I even got told off once or twice because I would not help with anything! :-) I would definately recommend Ross Welford, and if you are looking for a similar author, I would recommend Lara Williamson. Brilliant book. BrIlliant Author. ;-)
