Max is a crack baseball player. Saturday mornings he walks with his sister, Lisa, to her dancing school on his way to the park for his weekly game. One morning Max is early, and Lisa's teacher invites him to join the class. Max stretches at the barre. He struggles for a split. And before he knows it, he's having fun! Young ballplayers and ballet dancers will share Max's delight when he discovers that dance class is a great way to warm up for a home run.

Great little book. There's so many "girl power" stories out there telling girls that it is okay to do traditionally male activities but as the mother of 2 boys and 1 girl it seems there are far fewer stories letting boys know that "girly things" are okay and fun. Odd. Anyway, this is nicely done. Max loves his baseball and ALSO loves ballet after giving it a try. Thanks to Reading Rainbow for introducing us to this book.

This was one of my childhood favorites. So happy it’s still around to share with my kids.

My sons loved this book because they were baseball players. This book also teaches the value of the arts and how they can enhance many other things -- even baseball! This is a favorite of ours for many reasons. It also teaches care for one another..

I have a toddler named Max and can't wait for him to read this book!

Rachel Isadora makes a gentle point just right for the time we were beginning examine gender roles. Her illustrations are black and white, but with great detail and whimsy. In the story, Max finds out the benefits of a "girly" activity. However, in the face of peer pressure ---- he continues the activity! On that ground, it makes a nice lesson on not giving into peers when something works for you! A sweet story all around.

We read this to our son almost 20 years ago. He had the book memorized before he could read...we all still remember some of the lines! Fun book for kids!

I am so happy to see this book is still in print. This was one of my childhood favorites when I was a "little ballerina". ( I loved the comical illustrations). Now I am a instructor and have many students boys and girls with siblings. I highly recommend this book to any parent, especially with a son who has to spend any time "hanging out at the dance studio". A great read!

Superbly condescending book. The message boils down to: "boys may find dancing tolerable if it makes them better athletes." The only book I've ever returned.
