In award-winning author Ben Mikaelsen’s riveting sequel to the acclaimed word-of-mouth bestseller Touching Spirit Bear, readers will be captivated by what Booklist calls a “hugely satisfying resolution.”

Life in the wilderness—exiled from civilization as a punishment for his violent behavior—had its own set of hurdles, but for fifteen-year-old Cole Matthews, it's returning home and facing high school that feels most daunting.

With gangs and physical altercations haunting the hallways of their school, Cole and his former victim Peter—who Cole has now become friends with—must face it all together.

So when Peter’s limp and speech impediment make him a natural target for bullies, Cole’s suppressed rage comes bubbling to the surface a lot quicker than he anticipated. Will he throw everything away that he learned on the healing, remote Alaskan island?

In this tale of survival and self-awareness, Cole realizes it's not enough to change himself. He has to change his world.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Gripping and fast moving.” — KLIATT

“Mikaelsen provides a seamless transition between the two stories, as well as a highly satisfying resolution, and readers will find that, despite the new setting, this novel is just as much a survival story as its predecessor.” — ALA Booklist

From the Back Cover

In the wilderness, Cole found peace. But this isn't the great outdoors. it's high school.

At fifteen, Cole Matthews faced a prison sentence for slamming another student's head against a sidewalk. To avoid prison, he volunteered for Native American Circle Justice and agreed to a year in exile on a remote Alaskan island. There he was mauled by the legendary Spirit Bear and nearly faced death . . . but finally found redemption.

Now, his banishment over, he has to return home and face the one thing he may not be able to handle: high school. Gangs haunt the hallways. Cole finds violence at every turn and as the hate-filled school reaches its boiling point, the hibernating rage inside Cole begins to stir. In this tale of urban survival and self-awareness, Cole realizes it's not enough to change himself. He has to change his world.

I enjoyed this book as much as Spirit Bear it was great to see the story come to an end in a positive way. Uplifting and encouraging!
These two should be mandatory reading for school age students.

If you've got a six or seventh grade reluctant reader, this book could be a game changer. My students loved this book and were totally into it. It really explores the characters' perspectives. It does deal with a brutal beating of one character, anger issues (on the part of the attacker), justice, and the victims perspective. This book also explores what parents on both sides dealt with. My kids and I had great discussions during reading it, and it really opened the dialogue with my students about actions and feelings. I say it's worth it. Loved it.

We read Touching Spirit Bear in my Special Day 9th grade class. The class enjoyed the story so much they insisted on reading The Ghost of Spirit Bear. They definitely appreciated Ben Mickelson's resonating story!!!

I am born in the United States but still a person of English Second Language. I can read, write and speak to a native english speaker but my English isn't always good. This is one of the books that made a huge impact in my life even if this book is not as good as the first book.

I read this book because my middle school son had to read it in school. I wanted to connect with my son. I had no idea how much I would enjoy the first and second book of the Spirit Bear. When I started reading I didn't stop until I was done with entire book. Young or old these books have truly beautiful life lessons for any age. Really, really enjoyed the transformation of Cole and Peter. An amazing, well written book full of valuable lessons for any age.

I teach 6th grade English and we read Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen this year. The kids loved the first book so much, they begged me to get this one. I ordered 5 copies. They came quickly, and the were devoured by my students in a matter of days. All giving this sequel two thumbs up! I highly recommend this if your middle grader loved the first book, or anything written by Mr. Mikaelsen. Do note, the book makes more sense if you have read the first one. So make sure to grab that too!

My school began using Restorative Justice last year. We read the book's prequel Touching Spirit Bear and the students loved it. It helped students grasp the concepts of Restorative Justice. They requested more. I just finished Ghost and we will read this one to start our new school year. In Spirit Bear Cole learns ways to control his emotions when he is by himself. In Ghost he must apply these new skills when faced with others. I work with students identified with emotional and behavioral problems in grades 7-12.

A fantastic novel to follow Touching Spirit Bear by the same author. It shows the results of circle justice once the banishment is over....really takes hold. Be sure to read both novels and share with teens everywhere. There's something for everyone.
