From the Back Cover
Frances doesn't think her younger sister Gloria can be her friend. Gloria is too small to throw or catch a ball. Besides, Albert is Frances's friend. But when Albert has a no-girls baseball game, Frances sets out to prove to Albert a thing or two about friendship—and a thing or two about what girls can do. Along the way, Frances discovers that sisters can indeed be friends . . . maybe even best friends.
Now reillustrated in lovely soft pastels by original artist Lillian Hoban, this satisfying story of friendship is sure to have the many fans of this irresponsible badger cheering once again.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2013Frances (the main character) is a typical 3 year old. She has a little bit of an attitude but always does the right thing in the end. Her parents are excellent models w/ positive ways to parent. They are patient with her and allow her to find her way to the moral (w/out being religious) and right ending on her own.
This book is demonstrates children and their wily ways. They can relate to how Frances and her sister feels and you can relate to the parents' feelings also.

The books are wonderful for helping children explore their feelings and interaction with others. I like introducing these to children between the ages of 5-10 years of age.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2022I bought this book for my twin granddaughters for their first long roadtrip. We read a little of it together before they left. Just want to support their reading skills during summer break.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2018I remembered loving this book as a child and have enjoyed sharing it with my five year old. Frances explores sibling and friendship relationships in this book, and older preschoolers will find the challenging friendship situations and timeless and familiar. Frances gets left out of a ball game with her friend Albert one day because she is a girl, and then decides that her sister Gloria will be her best friend and excludes Albert. They are able to resolve their conflict and enjoy and an outing and picnic. The themes of exclusion, anger, fighting with friends are so familiar to me as a former teacher of four year olds! This story continues to be developmentally on target for 4-6 year olds I do not really love the use of the word "fat" in this book, however. Frances gets angry at Albert and calls him fat. I read this out loud to my son and have been changing the word to "mean" which destroys the rhyme, but it's important to me not to model body shaming.

5.0 out of 5 stars lovely little book
As a child growing up in America, my daughter LOVED " Frances " books. I first bought her " Bread and Jam for Frances" in an attempt to get a very picky eater to try food, any food. Even bread and jam would have been a breakthrough! Her diet, regrettably, took years to improve but her love of the Frances books endured. She is now introducing her elder daughter to the books, some of which are quite fragile and need replacing for current use. Her daughter loves them too. Oh, and her name is ......Frances!
