Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The Prophesied Three—cat Aldwyn, blue jay Skylar, and tree frog Gilbert—embark upon another bland but cozy heroic quest in this sequel. Paksahara, the treacherous rabbit familiar intent on overthrowing humans, has used the Shifting Fortress to take away human magic. Humanity’s only hope is to send the familiars after the Crown of the Snow Leopard, with which they can reclaim the Fortress. It’s a ridiculously contrived sequel, but there is an interesting revealed element: how humans stole rule of Vastia from animals in the first place. The familiars don’t reflect upon this long enough to doubt that theirs is the rightful path, but readers might. Grades 4-6. --Krista Hutley

Jay Epstein in an amazing author for children. These books have taken my daughter on adventures and given her a new love of reading. In third grade my daughter chose her favorite book to make her "Cereal Box Book Report" and the Familiars was it. She was excited to share her favorite story and characters with the class and has since allowed several of them to borrow it as they couldn't wait to hear what happens next. If your children aren't quite ready for Harry Potter this is a great option with just as much adventure, but for pets.

I gave my grandson the first and second book of this series and he absolutely loved them. He started reading in the car on the way home and asked his mom if it was OK to go to his room to continue reading. When he came downstairs several hours later he had finished the book and pronounced it GREAT (yes in capitals). I have just bought the third book which I'll save for his ninth birthday in October. He and I highly recommend these books to stimulate a child's imagination.

This book was amazing. The Familiars is my new favorite series. I read the first book before I read this. Spoiler: it contains a bit of betrayal. You should defiantly know it contains action. If your kids read book 1, The Familiars, tell them a movie of the first book is coming around the beginning of 2015!

I would recommend this book to someone in the age group of generally seven to twelve who likes books with adventure and mystery. This book has just the right amount of both-it is the kind of that you could sit on a couch and read for hours! If you enjoyed the authors of this series, you might also like Liz Kessler, Pseudonymous Bosch, Wendy Mass, or Lauren Baratz-Logsted. Be sure to also read the first and third book of this series; the Familiars and the Familiars Circle of Heroes.
