Dig, Dogs, Dig: A Construction Tail (I Can Read Level 1) Hardcover – April 26, 2016
Beginning readers will love this I Can Read adventure starring a doggy construction crew, gently adapted from James Horvath’s popular picture book of the same title.
Top dog Duke and his crew of construction-worker dogs are hard at work building a new park. They need lots of cool equipment to help them dig, haul, push, and plow—like a backhoe, dump truck, bulldozer, and grader. But what happens when the crew finds something unexpected buried deep in the ground?
Dig, Dogs, Dig is a Level One I Can Read book, which means it’s perfect for children learning to sound out words and sentences.

About the author
James Horvath is a children’s author and illustrator with more than 16 years experience creating whimsical and compelling illustrations that convey energy and emotion for a wide variety of clients and applications.
James graduated “Looney Tunes Laude” from the venerable school of Saturday Morning Cartoons, and received his advanced degree in adolescent time-wasting from the esteemed University of Marvel Comics. He also honed his skills through more traditional pursuits, such as graphic design and art direction for agencies and Fortune 500 companies, but that’s a mere subplot. His quirky and odd collection of award-winning characters hop and grunt across the pages of books, magazines and brochures, and dance off the shelves of retail stores. They’ve also been known to pop up — bug-eyed and bewildered — between the pixels of websites and interactive apps everywhere.
When not scratching and scribbling at his drawing table, James plays with his two young sons and beautiful wife, bangs around on the banjo, climbs trees, surfs and generally has a lot of fun. His children are following closely in his footsteps. Both are currently enrolled in the school of online cartoonery, studying Hanna Barbera 101 and asking questions like, “Who is this Pink Panther cat, and why is he so dang cool?!”
Dig, Dogs, Dig: A Construction Tail, is his first of a series of three picture books from HarperCollins.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2019we love all of these dog books by the author. One of our sons loves dig, dogs, dig while the other loves build, dogs, build. One of our sons has memorized all the dogs names! They are fun and the art is wonderful.
My problem with kids books is I get bored with them, these keep me engaged enough to not dread reading them to kids.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2013This book, while for youngsters, is a show-stopper for dog lovers of all ages! I wasn't sure if the material would interest my boys, but the book did not disappoint. We received it yesterday afternoon (after preordering it several weeks ago), and we were captured by the fun story line, incredible and talented drawings, and the upbeat nature of the book. This is one of those books that my boys will ask for night after night - guaranteed! And, there were several things that had Dad and me chuckling as well. We will be looking for more books by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2013Some books you read to your kids because they want you to. Other books you read to your kids because YOU want to read it. Put Dig, Dogs, Dig into the latter category. This is the kind of book I would have been mesmerized with as a child. Dogs, a cat to look out for, and lots and lots of construction equipment to ooh and aah over. Fun rhyming and excellent art, the dogs have a life to them that just reads "fun!" Highly recommended for your dog/cat/construction loving kids (and kids at heart)!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2015Our son loves this book. He picked it out himself from the scholastic book fair and we have read it almost every night for over a month. It's a fun book to read and combines 2 of his favorite things- construction and dogs! We are actually basing our son's 2nd birthday on this book and when I asked James if that was ok, his response was amazing and he actually sent us a packet of stuff to use for the party.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2013My daughters are 4 & 6 and think this book is great. It has a fun story line and the illustrations are vibrant & interesting. My girls love finding Jinx the cat and finding all the silly stuff going on in the background. As a bonus, they now point out all the heavy equipment while we drive down the road (with proper names). When I asked, they are very sure that all kids will like this book.

Fantastic book. My 4 year old son reads it all the time!
UPDATE: This is still a fantastic book (words and pictures are equally amazing)...The reason for the update: To the author & illustrator; please write a book called, "Sleep Dogs Sleep"!!!!! -My kids read this every night before bed...and I have to make up a new part at the end to get my kids to go to bed!) :)

5.0 out of 5 stars The story is great and the pictures are fantastic
My four year old daughter and two year old son both adore this book (and the other two by James Horvath). The story is great and the pictures are fantastic. This will be a go to for birthday gifts! It was a lucky find one day at the library and now we have collected them all for our home library collection.
