- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2024Sherlock and Holmes like you've never seen them before but truly so good! Sherlock as a teen girl? Sounds crazy, but Cavallaro nails it. Teen angst, romance, fast paced action. A must for Sherlock fans of any age
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2018While it took some time to get me hooked (maybe it had just been too long since I read book 2 and had to get back to where they left off) I loved the second half. Hoping for more of Charlotte Holmes and Jamie Watson in the future!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2018I mean...wow. I've never loved a series this much, from start to finish. I honestly didn't think I would with this one, either. Brittany Cavallaro is a master at spinning a story, building on characters as old as time, in a way that is neither too cheesy or overdone. She could have easily fallen down the same path that many others had when trying to weave a "Sherlockian" story, but she was able to take control and really make it her own.
Charlotte Holmes and Jamie Watson are the creations of Cavallaro, and the fact that they are descendants of THE Sherlock Holmes and John Watson does not even matter at this point, because I'm in it for Charlotte and Jamie. I'm in it for their story, their adventure, their journey and the mystery.
At first, I was a little iffy, thinking this was going to be one long book about both Jamie and Charlotte moping, but it quickly turned around when strange things started to happen to Jamie. Small, uninteresting incidents that could have easily been put away as pranks, except for his overwhelming paranoia that was developed from his friendship with Charlotte and also the events of the last book. Paranoia that helped him through this case, as he realized someone was out to hurt him and all those he loves to get back at Charlotte.
I really enjoyed seeing Jamie at the forefront of the events, taking control and getting to the bottom of things without Charlotte overshadowing him. He has definitely grown and changed in the year that has passed since August was shot. He is more mature but closed off, more focused, more paranoid and more in control. I loved the scene where Charlotte walks in on him thinking he needed saving, only to realize, he had things under control and what he really needed was a partner. That one scene put everything into perspective. Balanced the scales and displayed how much both Jamie and Charlotte have changed in the year they spent apart.
I loved the reunion. I loved the talk they FINALLY had. I loved how Cavallaro made us itch and wait for that moment they would reunite and when they did, she did not disappoint. They needed that time apart, and although it took forever to break that barrier, it was necessary. We, as readers, needed to distance ourselves from their relationship as well, we needed to get to know them separately, and it was very useful to do so. The chapters alternated between Charlotte and Jamie, and it was really good seeing them in a different light.
Here's what I really appreciated about this book though - the fact that Cavallaro stayed true to the Holmes and Watson dynamic, even while trying to insert some romance. You don't get a completely happy ending, and that's exactly how it should be.
I was honestly devastated when I finished the book, because that was the end of the trilogy and I really am going to miss the adventures of Charlotte and Jamie. Except I quickly found out that Cavallaro is in the process of writing the fourth book, which puts a huge smile on my face even as I write this! Yes, I'm a sucker for YA mystery. I hope she doesn't milk it too much, but I am excited to have one more book to look forward to.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2018You guys, the brilliance of this book. Where do I start. Okay. Let’s start with fact that we get a Charlotte Holmes POV for much of the book. Charlotte is one of the most incredible characters ever to appear in YA.
She is genius, hilarious, sardonic, perfectly flawed and vulnerable. I would gladly read another 50 novels with her in them. Jamie is the most perfect best friend and foil for Charlotte.
I really think Brittany Cavallaro is the Tana French of YA. She writes these gripping, intricate plots that tick like a Swiss watch, all rendered in these perfect, crackling sentences. She’s a published poet, and it shows.
If you love the great worldbuilding of sci-fi or fantasy, you’ll love this series. If you love the voice and emotional intensity of contemporary, you’ll love this series. If you love the twists and turns of mystery, you’ll love this series. It truly has something for everyone.
Do yourselves a solid and pick it up. Pick up the first two books in the series if you haven’t. You’ll thank me.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2018I really wanted to love this book. Holmes and Watson are such strong, unique characters and I couldn’t wait to spend more time with them - but it turns out, what I really wanted was for them to spend more time together. Which is something they do terribly little of in this book. Instead, they spend a lot of time wandering around separately, ruminating and moping and half-heartedly working on a “case” that feels small and childish after what happened in the previous book. Maybe that’s the point - they’re separately healing from some serious psychological wounds and not capable of doing more. But in many places, the story felt dreary to slog through, especially the first half.
But when it’s good, it’s *so* good, which is why it’s still getting four stars from me. Jamie and Charlotte together are lightning, crackling off the page. Cavallaro has something really special with these characters and the world she has created - here’s hoping that she does something more interesting with them next time around.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2018I just love Jamie and Charlotte so much. I love the complexity of these characters and their relationship. I didn't like this installment as much as the second book but I still absolutely loved it. I liked a lot of the relationship conflict in this book, but I thought the mystery wasn't as exciting (that's not to say that it isn't good; I still had a great time reading). I'm beyond excited that there's going to be a fourth book. I need more of this in my life. Ugh, I just love it so much. PLS READ THIS SERIES. I know the concept sounds weird, but IT. IS. SO. GOOD.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2021So this was a little far fetched for me. I was intrigued with the solving of the mystery if the main characters had been just a bit older. They did act like teenagers in dealing with relationships and making decisions but their skill levels far exceeded those of even CC most trained teenagers. The author’s writing style was a little simplistic at times as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2018Compelling and thrilling this is a great conclusion to one of my favorite series. The characters are so real and heartbreaking in the best ways. They all feel fully fleshed out and like their own person, from Charlotte and Jamie down to even the minor of characters. Cavallaro has such a talent for portraying mystery and youth and weaving them together perfectly. It has all the twists and turns of a Sherlock Holmes story with compelling characters that make the familiar feel fresh!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing third book to add to the series
I bought the third book of this amazing series for my daughter and she can’t stop talking about it. She likes that in this book it isn’t just Watson speaking- that it switches between Holmes and Watson( Charlotte and James/ Jamie). She absolutely adores this book and won’t stop until everyone she knows has read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice read
This bool explains carefully the ending of book 2 and has a satisfactory conclusion. Charlotte running around the world on a fake passport aged 17 isn't entirely unrealistic, but Jamie getting away with wounding someone, however bad, with a gun like Watson, is. Book 4 is out and it finishes the story well.
