Villain (Gone, 8) Hardcover – October 16, 2018

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 467 ratings

Acclaimed author Michael Grant’s globally bestselling Gone series continues with Villain, where old foes return and new ones rise, with action-packed scenes, gory battles, and plot twists that will leave readers scrambling for more.

It’s been four years since the events of GONE. The Perdido Beach dome is down, but the horrors within have spread. The alien virus-infested rock that created the FAYZ is creating monsters—monsters that walk the cities and countryside, terrorizing all.

There are tanks in the street and predator drones in the sky, doomed efforts to stop the disintegration of civilization. Into this chaos comes a villain with the power to control anyone with just the sound of his voice. Dillon Poe wanted to be a comedian once . . . but everyone made fun of him. Dillon the loser. Dillon the freak. Now he’s sending thousands to their death. Who’s laughing now?

The only people who can stop a superpowered villain are superpowered heroes. Dekka, Shade, Cruz, Malik, Armo, and a new mutant with unmatched powers, are all that stand in Dillon’s way. But when the lines begin to blur between hero and villain—some begin to wonder who’s really the monster.

About the Author

Michael Grant, author of the Gone series, the Messenger of Fear series, the Magnificent Twelve series, and the Front Lines trilogy, has spent much of his life on the move. Raised in a military family, he attended ten schools in five states, as well as three schools in France. Even as an adult he kept moving, and in fact he became a writer in part because it was one of the few jobs that wouldn’t tie him down. His fondest dream is to spend a year circumnavigating the globe and visiting every continent. Yes, even Antarctica. He lives in California with his wife, Katherine Applegate, with whom he cowrote the wildly popular Animorphs series. You can visit him online at www.themichaelgrant.com and follow him on Twitter @MichaelGrantBks.

Michael Grant was born in Los Angeles but that's not important because he was soon out of there. His father was a military man, frequently transferred, so Michael was the "new kid" in school every year but one. He left school early and embraced the rootless lifestyle as his own. He's lived in more flats and houses than he can recall, all across the US and in France and Italy as well. He's back in California as of this writing but with no plans to stay put.

Michael met his wife, Katherine (K.A.) Applegate, 37 years ago, in Austin, Texas. He saw her through her apartment window and immediately knocked on her door. They've been together since that first meeting.

Michael Grant did not set out to be a writer. He's worked as a stock clerk, a house painter, an apartment manager, busboy, waiter, restaurant manager, janitor, editorial cartoonist, political media consultant, documentary producer, and no doubt some other jobs he's managed to forget. After ten years working odd jobs together, Katherine informed Michael that it was time for them both to grow up, get careers, possibly have children. Once he was revived, Michael agreed.

Katherine and Michael began writing in 1989, often as a team, and wrote 150 books, including the ANIMORPHS series.

They have two disobedient children, Jake, 19, and Julia, 16, a yappy Chihuahua-ish dog (Katherine's), a hateful cat named Lightning (Katherine's) and an okay cat named Scooter.

I have throughly enjoyed this series, and enjoyed this one as well, although this is the first of the series that I didn't find myself completely engrossed in and unable to put down.

Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of Mr. Grant's. I have insisted on everyone I know that enjoys reading that they read his books. The entire Gone series I have absolutely loved. That being said the only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars was there wasn't enough back stories on the main characters in Villain.
Throughout the Gone series we were given the backstory on most of the main characters. That way we could at least try to understand the choices they were making. I have no idea why the villains of this book became so deadly so fast. The second story in this book could have had several chapters devoted to what was going on there. I Always Love Mr. Grant's writing, this just seemed a little bit rushed.
I do recommend this book. Its still an excellent book with a great story and I can't wait for the next one.

So I didn’t care for the book before this one. In my review, I said it was just ‘meh’ and I hoped that this book, book 8, would be better. It did not disappoint! The edge-of-your seat action Michael Grant’s Gone series is known for shines again in this book. I stayed up all night to finish it. I can’t wait for book 9! Am anxious to see The Rockborn Gang save the world!

I recommend reading the full I am sad that I am finally coming to an end of the series. So far it's been a blast!

There's a lot to digest in this. While I enjoyed it because this world is amazing; there was a LOT that was really unnecessary. There were Rockborn that were given so much life, only to have their stories literally go nowhere at all. I don't understand why so much effort was given to characters that didn't even have a chance to be or do anything. I think that's one of my biggest issues with this book. The other big issue is that it seemed rushed. Very rushed, actually. I suppose it was supposed to be a bridge between the beginning and the end, but there's no depth to this part of the story. It seems like it was written just to be written. Every character is far more impulsive than they should be, and its non stop chaos from the first page on. There's also the matter of Peaks, who was supposedly a main character, wise morph changed with zero explanation as to why it changed between book seven and book eight, who's storyline ended I'm the most unlikely, improbable way imaginable. The return of Drake was anticlimatic at best. There was literally no reason for him to be back. He doesn't really offer anything to the story, other than to give readers the futile hope of a Sam and Astrid comeback that never happens. Those two being so briefly in the story, but talked about constantly in the first book and this one is a bit pointless as well. There's absolutely no reason either needed to even be mentioned other than in Dekka's initial internal dialogue in the first book, so readers would have a glimpse of what they were up to; beyond that, its redundant and even the scene we see the two in is nothing more than filler and a small break from the absolute chaos of the entire second book. I honestly hope the final book is better than this. This series didn't deserve to be ruined with this Spinoff, in my opinion, and there's just one more book left to redeem the mess Mr. Grant has made of the memory of The Fayz and the Gone series.

The whole series is a never-ending adventure. Lots of action! What I really like about these books is how Michael Grant describes things in such a way that you can actually experience it. It's like seeing the movie rather than reading the book! Books 1-6 were fantastic. The last three are quite different, but not in a bad way.

Michael Grant continues to outdo himself. He truly captures the realism of it all and how the “Rockborn Gang” are affected by it all, how their humanity is called into question. Can’t wait for Hero
