Natty deals with moving after her mom’s departure by pulling a “Ted Lasso” and starting a pep squad in this standalone middle-grade novel about friendship and toxic positivity by the author of TBH and the Friendship List series.

When Natty’s mom kind of takes a break from her dad and sort of the whole family, Natty and her dad move to his childhood hometown of Miller Creek. Now she’s starting middle school for the second time, this time in Miller Creek—without her mom—or her BFF. But Natty’s doing great! Really. Anything is possible. And what’s the point of dwelling on the stuff that stinks when there’s so much good stuff to think about?

Natty is absolutely, positively sure that she can turn it all around. Like 1,000 percent sure. As long as she stays absolutely positive! She’ll get her dad off the couch, make her tons of new friends, and even convince her mom to come live with them in Miller Creek. First step? Starting a pep squad to spread the good vibes.

But what happens when the leader of the pep squad has no more cheer to give?

From Lisa Greenwald comes a heartfelt and reassuring novel about the pros and cons of always looking on the bright side, the ups and downs of making a fresh start, and the power of friendship.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Readers . . . will commiserate with her pain and root for her all the way." — Kirkus Reviews

PRAISE FOR DEAR FRIENDS: "Through her first-person narration, readers feel up close and personal with all Leni’s emotions: the pain, the humor, and the shock. It’s the rare individual who can take such an awkward, glorious deep dive, and readers will be grateful to go through everything with Leni as their guide. Uplifting."  — Kirkus Reviews

PRAISE FOR TBH, THIS IS SO AWKWARD: “Get ready to fall in love with these girls who use their humor and wit (and lots and lots of emojis) to right wrongs and build bridges.” — ALA Booklist

“Greenwald successfully blends emojis and text to bring the high drama and emotional changes of middle school to life. This first in a new series for preteens and young teens who value friendship and doing the right thing is pretty endearing.”  — Kirkus Reviews

“In this fine successor to Lauren Myracle’s TTYL and its sequels, Greenwald (11 Before 12) realistically captures the language of texting tweens, including exuberant use of emoji, and how mistakes can be made and tone misunderstood amid rapid-fire digital conversations.” — Publishers Weekly

PRAISE FOR FRIENDSHIP LIST #1: 11 BEFORE 12: “This book will entice those who want to read about a relatable, funny young woman.” — School Library Journal

“Kaylan’s first-person voice perfectly captures the horrors of starting at a new school, from the prospect of eating alone in the cafeteria to the awkwardness of meeting a new neighbor boy.” — Kirkus Reviews

I liked the characters and seeing Natty try to make her way. Sometimes she could be a bit over the top, but then you learn what's really going on.

I’m going to be honest, this book broke my heart a little. It is written in an easy to read manner and in some ways seems lighthearted which showcases the depth of its topic because Natty is also putting on a show and trying to hide her real feelings.
I loved Natty from the start. She was going through so much, and she did not know how to cope with it. I think a lot of kids are going to be able to identify with her and her struggles. She was trying to put on a happy face thinking that it would fix everything. I love how she learned that sometimes positivity will not fix problems that sometimes things are just hard.
And I love how nothing is technically solved in this book. Natty gains friends though, and she learns the importance of talking about her feelings. I think that lesson will be very helpful for kids and their parents because Natty’s dad had no idea how to talk to her.
I think I was a bit frustrated by Natty’s friends though, especially Mack because she seemed very abrasive and honestly kind of a jerk to Natty. I understand how she and Natty were foils to each other, but she still irritated me a bit. I think she did show Natty the importance of saying when things are bad though. But she also had to learn how to let Natty express her feelings which I think she did eventually learn.
I would definitely recommend this book. It is a heartbreaking and important read that is both entertaining and helpful in learning how to talk about your feelings.

Content Warnings

Absolutely, Positively Natty expertly examines positivity, specifically toxic positively through the story of Natty after moving with her dad to her grandparent’s community without her mother. Throughout this time, Natty is trying to stay positive and make everyone else around her be positive as well. The narration perfectly shows how much Natty is trying to remain positive within her own mind. At the same time, Greenwald is also able to show the, excuse my phrasing, more positive aspects of positivity with Natty’s positivity and attempt to make a pep squad having a positive impact on the community. Despite this she addresses how positivity to the extent of ignoring reality is unhelpful. Overall, I feel like the characterization of Natty was incredibly well done and believe that children, particular those struggling with being able to feel their feelings fully would find this book enjoyable and helpful.

I enjoyed this book so much, particularly the theme of toxic positivity, which I haven't seen in a book for this age group. Natty is absolutely (positively) determined not to let her problems get the best of her, even if it means turning a blind eye to things, including her friends who ask for help. I think readers will get a lot out of the book, especially as they see Natty working hard to make the community around her a better place, and the effect one person can have on many. I was rooting for Natty all the way. Highly recommend!

I may look too old on the outside, but inside it doesn't matter. We all want to 'be nice' and do good, put positivity into the world to hopefully get some sent back to us. Natty has every reason to be sad, depressed, and wants to hide away. Especially once she starts school in her dad's hometown.
We wonder how much can one girl go through and yet stay positive and hopeful.
As a child I would have loved this novel as i moved around a ton and tried to be happy to make new friends as fast as possible. Hopefully, many mid-grade aged children will say hey, "she's just like me."
OR as a grownup, I read it as, "I have been there, and it gets better."
Second chances, family, grief, making friends, and finding your real self---not the person you think you want people to see.

You can’t help but smile at every bit of this uplifting book! Natty is continually optimistic, and it slowly starts to catch on with her new classmates. When she decides to start a pep squad in hopes that mom will come back to see her, her fellow students are skeptical. However, they do show Natty their support and make posters, learn dance moves, and cheer on the teams. When they are supposed to have their first pep rally, Natty receives some unpleasant news. Can she still put on a happy face and go forward?
Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2023
Absolutely, Positively Natty was a good read. It's much different than the usually middle grade novels I read. I feel there was a lot of repetitiveness to Natty's day to day life, and her and her friends talked about the same thing a lot. It was slightly predictable towards the end, but I thought it did end well and Natty seemed to realize the good and the bad with being overly positive all the time. I did like all the different personalities of her friends, especially the touching moment she and one friend had towards the end. The book also brought up some hard issues, those facing any kid in middle school as friendship change, as well as issues such as depression and/or separated parents. While kids might handle those issues differently, I felt Natty did a good job of ignoring them, like many might do in real life.

*I received an advanced copy of this book for my honest review.
