Instant #1 New York Times bestseller!

Internationally bestselling superstar author Angie Thomas makes her middle grade debut with the launch of an inventive, hilarious, and suspenseful new contemporary fantasy trilogy inspired by African American history and folklore.

It’s not easy being a Remarkable in the Unremarkable world. Some things are cool—like getting a pet hellhound for your twelfth birthday. Others, not so much—like not being trusted to learn magic because you might use it to take revenge on an annoying neighbor.

All Nic Blake wants is to be a powerful Manifestor like her dad. But before she has a chance to convince him to teach her the gift, a series of shocking revelations and terrifying events launch Nic and two friends on a hunt for a powerful magic tool she’s never heard of...to save her father from imprisonment for a crime she refuses to believe he committed.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Thomas (Concrete Rose) brings her trademark voice to an action-packed series kickoff rooted in a mixture of African diasporic myth, biblical references, and U.S. history. Imbuing characters both brave and sweetly vulnerable with unflappable senses of humor amid harrowing circumstances, Thomas creates an elaborate supernatural mythology that boldly confronts fantasy tropes and questions of forgiveness." — Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"In a set of gleefully ingenious riffs on African and African American folklore, from “The People Could Fly” to Wakanda, Thomas pitches 12-year-old Nic into a whirl of stunning discoveries about her background as she struggles to understand her own magical gifts…. Sober references…give further historical and emotional depth to this rousing quest tale’s already richly articulated cultural context." — Booklist (starred review)

“Thomas has been a force on the young adult scene, and her first middle grade novel proves her range extends across genre and age groups; she weaves complex fantasy stories as deftly as realistic ones. [T]he freshness of the story and characters, along with Thomas’s control of a multilayered, nuanced plot, makes everything feel brand new. A book that will delight young readers and adults alike. Nic Blake is entering the Black fantasy scene with all the confidence and energy of its main character, and we’re so glad it’s here." — School Library Journal (starred review)

"Magnificent, hilarious and captivating. It can be challenging to satiate the appetites of readers who devour beloved middle grade fantasy series. Those readers will inhale Nic Blake and the Remarkables—and then begin counting down the days to its sequel." — BookPage (starred review)

"The Manifestor mythology combines African and African American folklore and Biblical stories, and the book explores Black Americans’ historical and present-day traumas alongside a fast-paced adventure and inventive worldbuilding. Readers will eagerly await the unearthing of more secrets in the next installment." — Kirkus Reviews

"Thomas skillfully incorporates folktales from the African Diaspora and infuses her story with the energy and emotional nuance of a pre-teen in this tale of intrigue, loyalty, identity, and courage—the first book in a projected trilogy." — Horn Book

"Thomas brings her considerable talents to this first volume of an anticipated trilogy—her characters are well-developed, the world’s framework is creative and satisfying, and powerful undercurrents of struggles against injustice add a memorable additional layer lacking in other similar series." — Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

"All the brilliance you’d expect from Angie Thomas: a page-turning plot, pitch-perfect characters, heart and substance, and real stakes that real kids will care about—plus magic! This is one of those rare books that will instantly become the best friend you didn’t know you needed. Nic Blake and the Remarkables is nothing short of a triumph. When’s the next installment, please?" — Rick Riordan, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series

“Packed with humor and bursting with heart and imagination, Nic's story will enchant readers of all ages!” — B.B. Alston, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Amari and the Night Brothers

"Thomas creates a new Afro-future world that feels steeped in history and lived in by generations of real flesh-and-blood families. The gravity of Thomas’s world never weighs down the story, which zips along with wit, humor, and sparkling dialogue. The Manifestor Prophecy is a tantalizing first installment in what is sure to be a blockbuster series, and a remarkable achievement for a master author in a thrilling new arena." — Soman Chainani, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The School for Good and Evil series

“Exploding with heart, humor, and all things Black Girl Magic, Nic Blake and the Remarkables is a triumph of friendship and Black Southern folklore and history." — Dhonielle Clayton, New York Times bestselling author of The Marvellers

“This book is no-holds-barred, fly by the seat of your pants (and other methods) trip to the corner of Thrill Street and Wonder Avenue. Nic Blake is amazing!” — Kwame Mbalia, author of the Tristan Strong series

Magical Midgrade Read
"Your brain is the only gift you need. You're the only gift you need.”⠀⠀Angie Thomas, Nic Blake and the Remarkables⠀Nic Blake and the Remarkables: The Manifestor Prophecy by Angie Thomas is a fun fantasy mid-grade read that I would definitely recommend to anyone who loves books about magic and mayhem! ⠀⠀This book is the first one in a series of three about the talented Nic Blake, a Remarkable black girl living in an unremarkable world. Remarkables are African Americans with magical gifts that harken back to their origins in Africa, with it's rich folklore. They have a variety of types of Remarkables including witches, vampires, and werewolves. Nic and her family are Manifestors, which is the most powerful form of magic in the Remarkable community. When Nic turns 12 she not only gets an adorable hellhound puppy but she also gets in over her head with a barrage of secrets and twists and turns that she never expected. I really enjoyed how much love showed through all of the characters. Nic is such a curious character and I love seeing how her mind works when she's figuring out the different puzzles that she's faced with. Her relationship with JP is great and it's satisfying to see him come into his own throughout the book series. I hope to see more of him in future books. The family dynamics are interesting and you can tell that each character cares a lot about the whole family as well as the individuals. The story has a lot of heart and navigates difficult family dynamics with ease. The African folklore and fantasy elements are so cool and bring this book to life. I especially loved the scenes in New Orleans and all of the history that was put into them. ⠀⠀Nic Blake and the Remarkables a strong series starter with tons of heart and great black characters. I think it's a great option for mid-grade readers who love the Percy Jackson, Amari (Supernatural Investigations), or Tristan Strong book series. ⠀⠀Plus Cocoa is adorable and made me think of my own hellhounds. My pup, Morgan, modeled her toe beans in honor of Nic's furry sidekick. ⠀

I bought this book for my 10 year old daughter and I to read together. I ended up reading by myself (you know how that goes LOL) because it looked interesting. I also teach 5th grade so I thought it could be a fun read aloud for our fantasy unit. I literally could not put it down. I read it in ONE day! The character development and the description were phenomenal. The way she was able to teach about our history while weaving this tale was something I hadn't experienced. I will be encouraging my daughter to read this and plan on buying the series for my classroom. Awesome!

Such a fun introduction to what I hope is a lengthy series! I was supposed to be reading this with my 10yo niece, but once I got started I couldn’t stop. Can’t wait to read what happens next!

“Nic Blake and the Remarkables- The Manifestor Prophecy” is a middle grade novel by Angie Thomas. It will be released on April 4, 2023.

I received an eARC from NetGalley and HarperCollins Children’s Books.

I LOVE discovering a good new series. Fantasy? Even better. Strong, powerful characters? Most definitely. A little mystery? Perfection. Multiple twists you don’t see coming? Indeed.

“Nic Blake and the Remarkables- The Manifestor Prophecy” will be huge. Quite simply put…ginormous! I need to reread this book to soak it all in. I cannot wait to see where Angie Thomas takes us next!

I highly recommend this book for middle grade readers. Everyone. Preorder. I cannot wait to hold this book in my hands on release day.

What it’s all about: Nic Blake is Remarkable. Not special like most of us are (or think we are), but Remarkable in the sense that she has magic powers. And she happens to be the most powerful type of Remarkable: a Manifester. Her and her dad live in the Unremarkable world, moving from place to place whenever someone sees her dad use his Gift. Now, they are living in Jackson, Nic has a best friend who lives next door, and the two of them have created a wiki for a series of books that is the top search result. On her twelfth birthday, Nic is supposed to be allowed to learn how her Gift works, but her father is making her wait another year. Even worse, she is grounded on her birthday and can’t go see the author of her favorite series. She sneaks out, but little does she know that meeting her idol will turn her life inside out.
tl/dr: A magical girl lives in an unmagical world and sets events in motion that change her life, her family, and her future forever.

My thoughts: I read this in two days. I have other books I am reading, but I didn’t pick any of them up while I was reading this. At the beginning I had a hard time getting used to the pacing and the writing (because I am not in middle school), but once I got into the rhythm of it, I couldn’t stop. Nic is such a great character! She’s smart, she’s determined, she’s stronger than she knows, but she is also unsure about herself and a bit awkward (what 12 year old isn’t?). Her relationship with JP, her best friend, is wonderful because there is no romantic tension, no crushes, and they are both so supportive of each other.

The adventure of the story moves quickly as the trio of Nic, Alex, and JP tackle each task. They aren’t always brave, in fact, they are mostly scared but determined. This book gave a more realistic version of how kids would act in this situation. They don’t have all the answers, and all they can do is follow the clues left for them and ask for help along the way. The contrast between Nic’s world among the Unremarkables and Alex’s life living with Remarkables provides a contrast that points out many of the problems with our society, but also shows that even the Remarkable towns are not without their danger and downfalls. Nowhere is perfect.

Favorite Character: Junior. He isn’t what he seems, and he isn’t afraid to be who he is.

Favorite Moment: When Nic and JP meet their favorite author and Nic’s father bursts in.

Memorable Quotes:

“His mom says he’s being a boy. I say he’s being a butt.”

“This situation shouldn’t be seen as normal, baby. I don’t care how many times it happens, how often it happens. It should not be normal.”

“Goodness, girl, be smart, not brave!”

“‘This is dangerous!’ ‘Who cares? We do what we wanna,” says Ralphie. “That right there is true freedom.”

“Ugh, here I go, tearing up again. I really hate having feelings.”

Thomas is one of the most gifted authors of her generation and the diversity movement. Her first foray into fantasy did not disappoint. I enjoyed the adventures of Nic and her friends as they try to save her dad. Ready to see where the characters take in their next adventure.

A fun, magical middle grade adventure!

Overall, Nic Blake and the Remarkables is a fun read that will entertain plenty of readers. However, I didn't quite fall in love with the voice of Nic and the way the history was included in such large chunks. The amount of exposition took me out of the flow of the story a lot of the times. And while I loved that the magic and world had its foundation in African American history, I think the way it was introduced a lot of the times felt too much.

The plot and magical world itself, though, was exciting and unique! I loved all of the different Remarkables introduced and the different folklore come to life. It's a rich imagining that I think middle grade readers will enjoy if they can get through some of the more dragging details that slow the pace down.

There are plenty of twists and turns along the way, and I love that Thomas isn't afraid to make your feelings towards a character change.

Definitely give this one a chance for a magical adventure through the south!
