About the Author

James Marshall was born in San Antonio, Texas, and grew up sixteen miles outside of the town on the family farm. On a fateful summer afternoon in 1971 James Marshall lay on his hammock drawing pictures. His mother was inside the house watching Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf on TV. The strident voices of the movie's protagonists, George and Martha, split the quiet air, and as the sketches began to take shape, history was made... and James Marshall became one of the most prolific and successful author/illustrators of children's books.

He is best known for his series on the mischievous exploits of Fox, a debonair, lazy showoff; the uproarious adventures of the two Cut-Ups, Spud and Joe; George and Martha; and the misadventures of the Stupid family.
The Washington Post said in a review of his work, "There are few better writers and illustrators for children now than Marshall. Certainly there is no one else working today who more successfully captures the child's point of view than does the creator of George and Martha and the Stupids." The New York Times said about the Fox books: "The miracle of Mr. Marshall's work is that so often his stories are as profound as they are simple." He illustrated new versions of many children's classics, including Goldilocks and the Three Bears, for which he received a Caldecott Honor, Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs, and Hansel and Gretel.

My son was a struggling reader at the end of his kindergarten school year, so we pulled him out and began his homeschool journey. After an intense phonics unit teaching him to chunk his words instead of reading whole word and guessing 75% of the time, we began to read the Fox Series. The first book was Fox on Wheels, he loved it so much he wanted to read every book in the series. So that is what we did, I found this book Fox and His Friends challenging enough to increase his reading skills, the book also had enough of his sight words to make him a more confident reader. The vocabulary is kid friendly and I could tell he was comprehending the stories as well because he was laughing while reading it. He loves the Fox series so much, that after we exhausted the series, he reread them again and wanted to learn more about the author. We researched and learned alot about Edward Marshall, he also decided to read the Cut Ups series as well.

If you have a child between 3 and 8, you should buy this book. The late, great James Marshall (Edward was a pseudonym) had the rare ability to tell a story using easy-to-read words, but still with genuinely surprising and humorous twists. This book's ending is a brilliant twist, which I will not spoil here.
If you don't have a child the right age, you should buy this anyway, but you may have to think of an excuse.
This book ranks with Marshall's best, which also include the sublime "Three By the Sea," as well as the better-known "Miss Nelson" and "George & Martha" books.
A note to the publisher: You really should keep James Marshall's better books available in hardcover library editions. This guy's best works are classics, and they'll continue to sell for at least another century.

Humorous books that elementary thru middle school will find funny. Fox and his friends and siblings have the same annoyances and interests that we all did at that age. Nothing objectionable. Funny and affectionate. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

We have three or four of these L3 Fox books by James Marshall and Edward Marshall. Although these are "early readers" and may be meant for older children, the stories and pictures are still entertaining for littler kids. Our three year old preschooler loves Fox and his antics and equally important, my husband and I enjoy reading these books to him, too.

I know a lot of people don't like the silliness, but I believe it was the right amount. Fox is a little bit of a rebel, who still wants to do the right thing like any eight-year-old. Plus, the little sister dynamic reminded me of my own little sister dynamic.

Haven't read this since I was in kindergarten, and that was twelve years ago. It was great to travel back to the past. It's also funny.

I remember loving the "fox books" when I was younger and now my 5- and 3-year olds love them too. They're clever and cute and easy-to-read, with silliness that my kids can pick up on. Plus my 5 year-old can sound out most of the words. Definitely worth picking up.

Love these books, keep my little granddaughter giggling at Fox's antics as well as helping her to become familiar with simple words.
