Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3-Another winner from this creative team. Taking a nap is always a top priority for Mr. Putter and his cat. It occurs to him that maybe they should be a bit more active, so he goes to the basement, gets his baseball mitt, and decides to get more exercise. His friend Mrs. Teaberry and her dog, Zeke, have just the team for them to join. As the game progresses, Mr. Putter begins to question whether he has made the right decision. After all, he has problems with his knees and running is out of the question. Mrs. Teaberry is just the opposite; she's full of life and living it to the fullest. Their animals come along and are, of course, part of the high jinks that ensue. The artwork, done in pencil, watercolor, and gouache, is expressive and quite hilarious as Zeke wreaks havoc in the infield and makes an assist in the outfield. The five short chapters have a well-designed ratio of pictures to words. The text font is clean and clear, making this a good choice for advancing readers.-Janene Corbin, Rosebank Elementary School, Nashville, TNα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist

When Mr. Putter and Mrs. Teaberry join an oldsters’ baseball team, Tabby (Mr. Putter’s cat) makes a contented benchwarmer, but Zeke (Mrs. Teaberry’s dog) chases every hit ball, snatches it, and runs around in circles. Their teammates grumble until Zeke and Mr. Putter save the day. Rylant’s sympathetic characters work their usual magic, entertaining all ages with a text well suited to beginning readers. Meanwhile, Howard doubles the fun with amusing pencil, watercolor, and gouache illustrations that depict “seasoned” players as they round the bases in slow motion and attempt to field ground balls even when their knees are saying, “No way.” Grades K-2. --Carolyn Phelan

My six-year-old granddaughter loves these books. They were highly recommended by my sister-in-law who was a teacher and a principal for elementary school. perfect for first grade reader.

I used these as readers for my late 1st grader/early 2nd grader. I love how many series Cynthia Rylant has done on different reading levels, and Mr. Putter and Tabby were as fun as the others we have used. I have found that my children learn to read better when they love the characters, and they always love Cynthia Rylant's characters. In these books, the characters are cautious Mr. Putter, his very sanguine neighbor Mrs. Teaberry, and their pets, which suit them each perfectly. Each story is gentle and fun. Mr. Putter grits his teeth and goes with Mrs. Teaberry's newest wild scheme, her dog Zeke is crazy, his cat Tabby wants to rest, and Mrs. Teaberry bakes him wonderful goodies. They are kind to each other, and he reminisces about boyhood days... really sweet stories. My son told me when we were going through all of these that reading was his favorite time of day.

If you haven't delved into Cynthia Rylant's many series for many reading levels, you can do a google search to figure out which one might work best for where your child's skill level is.

Mr. Putter and Tabby teach children to be sensitive to old people and pets. Even neighbor is an elderly woman with an older dog. The readers learn that everyone (no matter what the age) loves adventures and meeting new challenges. You will laugh and cry with tears over each book. This kind of book will remind the young readers that they have grandparents in their lives who need to be appreciated too! I got 2 copies of each title due to high demand... and they are AR level about 2.0-2.8. The life lessons learned in each book is worth everything!

This is another good book about Mr. Putter, Tabby, Mrs. Teaberry and Spike by Cynthia Rylant. I got this for my grandsons and they really enjoyed it. I like all the Mr. Putter books except "Mr. Putter and Tabby Ride the Train" Cats and dogs were not allowed on the train and Mr. Putter and Mrs. Teaberry found a way to sneak them on and I think that is a bad lesson for children so I would not advise getting that one. However, the other 14 or 15 or so books are great and I know your kids or grandkids ages 1 to 8 years would really enjoy them.

Our family has come to love the Mr. Putter series. The stories 'normalize' seniors and help our kids understand that that generation can have just as much fun as they do! The illustrations are great and the stories always make us laugh. We've bought every one in the series!
