From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—With endpapers featuring cupcakes, pink pigs, friendly cows, and sprinkled cookies, this book will have children on the path to sweet dreams before they have turned a single page. A young child with tan skin and a black bob with the pronouns of "they" and "their" is ready for bed—pajamas on, teeth brushed, book read—but is reluctant to go to sleep due to a concern about having bad dreams. Momma's soothing response: "If you need to, you can always call on the Good Dream Dragon." After making the usual and not-so-usual attempts at falling asleep, including counting sheep, ducks, cows, and pigs, the youngster summons the dragon. The periwinkle-and-purple creature soon appears in the bedroom with a flourish and proclaims she will take the child to the dreams, since the dreams are not arriving on their own. Traveling by dragon entails flying among the stars and comets and ending up in Dreamland, with its quilted countryside, flowers, and butterflies. Stopping in a town made entirely of books, the child relaxes in a comfy chair and reads bedtime stories, including one that reflects the story they are in, until the dragon delivers the sleepy child safely back home. When the youngster begs the dragon to stay, they are reassured there is nothing to fear; their bravery is obvious as courage was revealed by willingness to accompany the flying dragon to distant Dreamland. The full-color digital illustrations extend from margin to margin with some vignettes, and reveal all the actions of the text. It's all as soothing as can be, and will send any child off to peaceful dreams. VERDICT Here is a satisfying tale sure to enlist the imaginations of young listeners for a pleasant bedtime.—Maryann H. Owen

Praise for Good Dream Dragon:
An ALA Rainbow Book List Selection

"Unable to sleep, a child summons the help of the 'Good Dream Dragon' in this fairy tale–like story of nighttime hijinks….
With a final allusion to bravery, Davis lightly inserts emotion into what’s otherwise a pleasantly straightforward bedtime aid."―Publishers Weekly

"The concept of the Good Dream Dragon will reassure little ones who might have nighttime or bad-dream anxiety…. Dreamland itself is, fittingly, safe and whimsical. The illustrations are soft with twilight purples and playful patchwork scenery. The idea of a protective dream guide is perfect for the preschool crowd, often newly aware of nighttime fears. Sweet and gentle, an ideal bedtime read."―

Love reading this book to my children before bed. They love it too! So cute. Love the inclusivity too!

At first glance this appears to be a cute book, however, the writing is atrocious. I could have written a better narrative. Additionally, the main character is clearly a little girl but is referred to as “the child/they/their”. This would be fine for an adult book but inappropriate and confusing for a toddler. The entire book is bizarre.

Don't get me wrong, I love and appreciate books that educate and advocate for all kinds of diversity and feature different types of families! But it's also really nice to just have a nice story where a person's gender/race/sexuality isn't the focus but rather just inferred background information. This book checks that box.

To all the whining, hate-filled, people giving this book a bad review based solely on how it's a window instead of a mirror for you: drink some water and go for a walk or something. And move on with your miserable existence.

We took this book out of the library and just loved it so much we bought it. It's a sweet story of pushing nightmares away, and the child lands in a beautiful dream land. Beautifully illustrated and written with so much caring it's lyrical and sweet.

Found the book to be poorly written and nonsensical.
Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2022
In this sweet bedtime story, a child is worried about having bad dreams. One of their two moms reminds them they can always call on the Good Dream Dragon. After struggling to sleep, they call out to the dragon and it appears--a friendly creature who flies the child to a mountaintop in Dreamland.

There, the child has gentle adventures until they feel sleepy, and the dragon flies them home. Although they want the dragon to stay, the dragon tells them they have proven their courage by flying on a dragon, and don't need the dragon anymore. The child agrees, and snuggles down to sleep. As the dragon flies away, it affirms that the child can still call “Whenever you need me.”

The story has just the right spark of imagination. There are fun touches in the illustrations, too, such as a stuffed dragon on the child's bed that looks remarkably like the one in their dreams. A picture with a transgender flag hanging behind the child's bed implies that the child (who uses they/them pronouns) is trans, although this is not part of the story.

Children of all genders and family types should appreciate this story about overcoming nighttime fears; for trans and nonbinary ones and those with two moms, it also offers much needed representation. A welcome addition to any bookshelf.

Paper object color writes a beautiful fantasy planet where things can dissociate from properties and become encouraging when things bad. Child can imagine anything child wants which is great for child since child has bad dreams. Fortunately for child, the dream dragon can help child with all child's dream issues. The only thing child can't imagine are binary numbers and transistors - but dream dragon is there to help child all the way.
