In this unmissable story of friendship, courage, and healing, a girl struggling to breathe befriends a boy shrouded in dust, perfect for fans of Erin Entrada Kelly and Erin Bow.
After Avalyn nearly died from an asthma attack, her parents moved her to the clear, dry air of Clear Canyon City, Arizona. And for the last ten years, she’s been able to breathe. That is, until Adam showed up.
Quiet and disheveled, Adam is an instant target for the bullies who have plagued Avalyn and her friends. As Avalyn gets to know him, she begins to suspect that the sudden, strange increase in dust storms around town is somehow connected to his emotions. She thinks his problems may be even worse at home, especially when massive black walls of dust start rolling in after the school day. Will she find a way to stand up for her new friend? Her life may just depend on it.
A page-turning blend of mystery and action, bestselling and award-winning author Dusti Bowling delivers a powerful tour de force.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2023While this author has had to defend this book against those who find the real life horrors of this world offensive and work to hide them away rather than bring them to light and help those who need, I will say the way this author addressed the horrors of bullying and molestation is unmatched.
A story masterfully crafted to show real struggles of young middle school students who are faced with having to make big decisions that can result in life or death. A story of finding the power in your voice. Stopping bullying. Stopping abuse. Being the change. Saving another from the horror they feel and you feel through them. While child molestation is never something anyone wants to talk about or think about the reality is, it is out there and victims need a voice. Whether that voice forms from them or from a friend or from an unexpected moment of clarity, they need to be heard. Victims and those hiding horrible secrets need to know they aren’t alone. Dusti Bowling does all of this with creativity and by using the power and beauty of words. A must read for everyone.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2024A life as a middle grader is never easy. This story takes us on the adventures of life lessons within self and those around you. Strong female role dealing with illness bullies and abuse.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2023A powerful, affirming, and important story of friendship, courage, and healing, sensitively and honestly told in Bowling’s signature style. My favorite quote: “Breath is powerful. What I choose to do with my breath can change the world.” Indeed.
When Avalyn, the heroine of the tale – who struggles to breathe due to severe asthma and allergies – finds the courage to speak out about the bullying and abuse taking place at her school, things do begin to change. The message is a simple but powerful one: Speak up. Do not be silent. Tell someone you trust and don’t stop telling until someone believes you. Use your words, your breath, to make a difference.
This is an important message and an important book that should be required reading in every classroom in America. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2023This is an important and realistic story except for the ”dust.” It seemed like a fantasy until my adult mind reached to embrace the metaphor. If you think of the dust as energy it seems realistic, but young readers might think this is a fantasy story. There have been some harsh criticisms of the story because of one paragraph. I read an opinion that it was “shockingly graphic” and upset a young reader. It wasn’t shockingly graphic, it was an appropriate description. I felt the bullying scenes were much worse to read. Children experience abuse in many forms and this book is a story explaining how one community handles issues. I really loved this book but I realize that it is a high quality of literature for middle grade readers and only strong readers or interested readers would actually finish the book. I’ve recommended it to others and shared my copy with a classroom teacher.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2023Dusti Bowling, if that is her real name, can WRITE. Everything she writes is compelling and wonderful. She writes the type of books that you stay up past your bedtime reading. Dust is no exception. I got this book in the mail and read it in two and a half hours. Maybe it was because I read the whole thing in one sitting and I’m still reeling from the story, or maybe it was because I’ve read everything else Bowling has written, but Dust was, while beautiful, incredibly sad. The book starts with sadness, ends with sadness, and has tragedy and sadness sandwiched in the middle. I love Avalyn and her friends, whom Bowling makes seem so real. I love how Avalyn is an empath. I love the portrayal of good, loving parents. I love that Avalyn finds her voice. But Avalyn’s allergies and asthma, the cruelty Avalyn and her friends experience at school, the lack of ANY adult noticing ANYTHING terrible happening for what, years?! and the heartbreaking glimpse into the life of Adam is just…. a lot. Bowling’s books usually feature a lot more hope and I think middle grade books should have plenty of hope in them, especially with the heavy and difficult subject matters many of them broach. Dust attempted to end on a high note, but the ending felt quick and empty, while the entire rest of the story felt full and real and heavy.
Dust is like a beautiful but furious swan that flies into the room, pecks out your heart, stomps on it a few times, and then flies right back out. 8/10, would recommend to ages 13 and up.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2024Another Dusti Bowling gem! A compelling story of friendship, dealing with asthma, bullying and doing the right thing even when it is hard. Realistic fiction with just a touch of fantasy.
