Editorial Reviews

Review

“I’m honored to dress women of all sizes and genders for the runway and the red carpet. I am so excited for Rennie’s forthcoming picture book that reminds children—and all of us—how important it is to accept and respect ALL bodies.” — Designer Christian Siriano

"The most important thing we can do for a child’s self-esteem is to teach them that their bodies (just like their skin color, ability, or gender) are perfect just the way they are. But this specific lesson is often left out of early childhood books and conversations. With parents reaching for books like B is for Bellies, we can hope that more children will grow up never having to undo the negative thoughts they have about their bodies and instead will grow up celebrating themselves as worthy, capable, and uniquely wonderful." — Whitney Way Thore, author, star of TLC’s My Big Fat Fabulous Life, and founder of the No Body Shame movement

“I know this is a book meant for children, but it really resonated with me, a 44-year-old woman! Maybe it’s quarantine, maybe it’s working in Hollywood where how you look is a big part of your job, or maybe it’s just a lifetime of subconsciously comparing ourselves to others ... whatever it is, I had tears in my eyes reading this. This book needs to be on every child’s bookshelf. It breaks my heart to see what happens to our tweens and to think of them as the little girls who were once so carefree and unaware of their looks. I wish we could bottle up that confidence and carry it with us as we age. This book is the reminder that we all need.” — Andrea Barber, author, Fuller House star, and mental health activist

“ . . . this is above all an early introduction to body inclusivity. Simple and powerful.” — Kirkus Reviews

A must-purchase in the ever-expanding genre of picture books that normalize the multitude of ways a body can be healthy and beautiful. — School Library Journal (starred review)

Common Sense Selection A remarkable ABC book, full of rhymes, colors, and inclusive illustrations, that teaches young readers about body positivity. Perfectly right for encouraging conversations and planting the seed that all bodies are good and should be respected. — Common Sense Media

This book is fantastic. On its surface its a fun alphabet based rhyme young kids will enjoy with delightful illustrations. Yet, on a deeper level it is a celebration of diversity and inclusion. Today, as many people forget how important kindness can be, this message is more important than ever, and young kids need to learn this as early as possible. My family loves this book, highly recommend!

What a sweet and inspiring picture book for our little one! Yes, sometimes Mommy or Daddy's body jiggles. And that's okay! Our bodies are amazing just as they are, and this book celebrates that. Beautifully written--so much fun to read together!

This book could not have come at a more perfect time! My 8-year-old daughter is more and more aware each day of the different shapes and sizes of her classmates, and my son is about to start kindergarten. I'm glad I have a book like this to use as a jumping off point to start conversations with them both about bodies, diversity, and health. The writing is fresh, thoughtful, and smart, and the bright, colorful illustrations are so fun. Perfect for ages 2 and up.

I really like this book, and we have a few similar books already. I just can't get past the phonics in this one. "C is for change”, "G is for gender”, and "P is for physical" are fine if you aren't focusing on the alphabet or your kid is 6+, but the simple and concise text makes more sense for a younger kid. Though, to be fair, phonics is obviously not the primary goal of the book and 2-7 is the age range advertised. (And "X marks the spot" is totally fine because at least it's not Xylophone or X-ray! lol) And it really is a great book! Just not quite the right format for my kid.

So if you aren't a phonics stickler like me, and you're looking for brief but meaningful and uplifting talking points with your young child, you'll love this book! If the ABC format isn't for you, I recommend "Some Bodies", "Bodies are Cool", "Every Body: A First Conversation About Bodies", and "Your Whole Body: From Your Head to Your Toes, and Everything in Between!" I think they all have read-alouds posted online. I included a (silent) video with this review because I couldn't find a read-aloud for this book anywhere; I hope it's helpful!
