One rainy day, a little boy is upset because he can't go out and play. His mom comes up with a way to keep him entertained--by drawing a picture of herself and him going outside, playing in the rain, and splashing in a giant puddle. They have so much fun drawing themselves that they decide to venture out and make the most of the rainy weather.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Puddle:

"Yum deftly ties moods, weather, parenting, and the power of art together.
" ―Kirkus Reviews

“It’s just a picture,” mother and son tell one another at various points, but Yum’s (This Is Our House) renderings―done in a rough, childlike style that fits the story to a T―and all-dialogue text prove that there’s powerful magic in every act of representation, no matter how novice the artist."

We found this book at our local library and my son loved it so much that we had to get it! It is a great story for littles, my son love pretending to jump in puddles as I read to him.

It's raining outside and of course, there is nothing to do inside. Mom suggests that they draw together. No way! So she starts drawing by herself. Almost immediately she captures his attention by drawing his umbrella, then adding people and activities to the umbrella. In time he decides that the activities being drawn by his mom might be fun to do.

It is perfect for a mother who wants to engage with her child, especially drawing together.

The book was wonderful. It made me want to be a young kid again. Hyewon really work hard to make this great book.

My granddaughter's favorite library book so now she will have a copy when she visits me. The build up and anticipation of a puddle really attracts her two year old attention and sense of humor more than any other picture book she has listened to.

I love this book; first borrowed it at the library. Illustrations are adorable and expressive. It taught my 1.5 yr old the word puddle. Now she points to a puddle when she sees one outside and says, "puddle. Splash, Splash!"

I hate rainy days! says the little boy in this book. He can't play soccer or ride his bike. He is stuck inside. His mom suggests that he draw a picture. He doesn't want to draw.

So, his mom draws a picture instead. She draws a blue umbrella. The little boy is intrigued - and so are the cat and dog - and then the boy asks his mom if she will draw him in the picture. She draws him holding the umbrella. Can she draw the dog in the picture, too? Mom says she doesn't like wet dog smell.

But it's only a picture. Soon, the mom, dog and boy are walking when the boy spies a puddle. What a mess he makes with huge splashes. But it's only a picture, the boy says. The boy is having so much fun with the puddle in the picture, it convinces the real boy to go for a walk in the rain.
So, they do.

Guess what happens when the boy spies a big puddle, a real one? Well, just look at the cover of this book and it will give you a hint. I found this book quite charming. Very clever to have the mom's imagination and creativity inspire the young boy. 4.5 stars

Summary: One rainy day, a little boy complains that there is "nothing to do". Mom tries to make light of the situation by calmly initiating a drawing activity. After some initial complaints, curious little eyes pop up to examine Mom's drawing and little one suggests some additions to the evolving outdoor scene (featuring him, Mom, and of course Billy, the dog). Before long, their scene gets quite realistic and the pair decides to take their "rainy day" scene outside. But what happens when they see a real puddle?

I loved this simple but realistic story between a mother and her son. The banter between them was so accurate- any mother would relate to the whiny generalized complaints that come just before the piqued curiosity when a child is in a "mood".

Themes include- rainy days, mother/child bond, making the best out of a situation, and using your imagination- punctuated with a "dance like no one's watching" ending (hint: it involves a giant puddle). Great rainy day read or for busting the "boredom blues".

Loved reading this with my daughter. The reader gets drawn into the story that the mother and child are creating. It is fun to make predictions and look at their facial expressions.
