Editorial Reviews
Review
Puddle:
"Yum deftly ties moods, weather, parenting, and the power of art together." ―Kirkus Reviews
“It’s just a picture,” mother and son tell one another at various points, but Yum’s (This Is Our House) renderings―done in a rough, childlike style that fits the story to a T―and all-dialogue text prove that there’s powerful magic in every act of representation, no matter how novice the artist." ―Publishers Weekly, starred review

It is perfect for a mother who wants to engage with her child, especially drawing together.
So, his mom draws a picture instead. She draws a blue umbrella. The little boy is intrigued - and so are the cat and dog - and then the boy asks his mom if she will draw him in the picture. She draws him holding the umbrella. Can she draw the dog in the picture, too? Mom says she doesn't like wet dog smell.
But it's only a picture. Soon, the mom, dog and boy are walking when the boy spies a puddle. What a mess he makes with huge splashes. But it's only a picture, the boy says. The boy is having so much fun with the puddle in the picture, it convinces the real boy to go for a walk in the rain.
So, they do.
Guess what happens when the boy spies a big puddle, a real one? Well, just look at the cover of this book and it will give you a hint. I found this book quite charming. Very clever to have the mom's imagination and creativity inspire the young boy. 4.5 stars
I loved this simple but realistic story between a mother and her son. The banter between them was so accurate- any mother would relate to the whiny generalized complaints that come just before the piqued curiosity when a child is in a "mood".
Themes include- rainy days, mother/child bond, making the best out of a situation, and using your imagination- punctuated with a "dance like no one's watching" ending (hint: it involves a giant puddle). Great rainy day read or for busting the "boredom blues".
