About the author
After fifteen years illustrating books for other authors, with clients as diverse as National Geographic, Scientific American, and NASA, I began writing and illustrating my own books, focusing on science history. Since 2003 I have written and illustrated four books.
My first book, "Dangerous Planet: Natural Disasters That Changed History," was called "part Jared Diamond ... part Stephen Jay Gould" by the New York Times Book Review. Dangerous Planet was listed by the American Library Association as appropriate reading for children traumatized by Hurricane Katrina.
"Outbreak: Plagues That Changed History," was called "pleasantly lurid" and “irksomely left-wing” by the Wall Street Journal, and "the stuff of nightmares" by the Denver Post.
Both Dangerous Planet and Outbreak have been translated into Korean.
"The Genius of Islam: How Muslims Made the Modern World," with Arabic, and Indonesian translations, was selected in 2012 as the top non-fiction book for youth by the United States Middle East Outreach Council and was selected for the master list of notable books by the Children’s Book Council.
"The New Ocean: The Fate of Life in a Changing Sea," was called a "..thought-provoking and often alarming message, wrapped in stunning marine images." School Library Journal called it "mesmerizing."
Since 2011, I have visited over fifty international schools, universities and institutions and conferences, leading writing and art workshops and presentations on creativity, climate change, pandemics and disasters.
My paintings have been exhibited at the Smithsonian’s Global Health Odyssey Museum at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta and the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Washington, DC. My paintings for the NASA Art Program are in the permanent collection of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2020Vibrant illustrations and a beautifully written book. The information, the pages and the history was put in context so well. It was easy to understand.
Especially explained why the genius of Islam is many a time not credited or hidden.
I couldn’t put it down! Loved it!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2020I am teaching my child about the achievements of Muslims over the centuries - though I am a Muslim myself. And I must say this book is quite good and makes my work so much easy.
I must say, it should be a bit detailed. It is very very compact.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2014This book contains a lot of great information about how Islam and Muslims played a huge part in the development of the modern world. I found this when looking for books for my 10 year old daughter, but it has information for all ages. It is well written and beautifully bound. A great book for anyone who has an interest in world history.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2018It is an easy read and easy to understand history lesson for all levels of students. It’s a great introduction into the history of Islam in the West and it’s unspoken influence.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2014Good introduction to what Islam has contributed to modern society. Highly recommended for the thinking young person. An antidote for narrow mindedness.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2015The book is large as in bigger than copy paper size and very brief in pages. However, inside this book you read about the many interesting contributions the Muslim world made to help build modern society, which you typically do not learn in history. I definitely think the book is a good quick read and would recommend it. However, i wouldn't recommend buying it, if you can rent it for cheap or borrow it from the library you should. With that said if money's not an issue definitely buy the book if you want to support the author.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2011The illustrations are wonderful and the graphic designer did a fantastic job so that the text, white space proportions and type make this book a visual pleasure. The information is top notch and it is an absolutely essential book for historical reference. I bought it to donate to my middle school's library and the librarian loved it.
