Moo, Moo Brown Cow! Have You Any Milk? Hardcover – June 28, 2011

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 21 ratings

Moo, moo, brown cow! Have you any milk?
"Yes, sir, yes, sir," smooth as silk.
Does milk make me sleepy before I go to bed?
"Yes, sir, yes, sir," the brown cow said.

There's something about this well-known and well-loved nursery rhyme! Clever new verses not found in the original offer charming new critters and gently teach young readers a little something along the way. In verses that mimic the original
Baa Baa Black Sheep cadence, a plucky young boy asks each of the farm friends he encounters about the gifts they give us, all in preparation for a bedtime snack and a dream-filled sleep. And as the sun begins to set and the animals prepare to "dream the whole night through of flowers to sip, grass to chew," the little boy asks the animals one last question.

Whether read aloud or sung, this picture book can be a rollicking tale or a perfect lulling bedtime story.

Author Phillis Gershator and illustrator Giselle Potter weave together melodic rhyme and folksy illustrations to transport children to a place of discovery and cozy contentment in this delectable read-aloud.

Similar to another reviewer, we checked this out of the library but after several renewals I decided to buy it. I do get a little confused when to sing and when to read the lines and I don't think they always flow, but we manage. My 2 year old loves farm animals and loves the song Baa Baa Black Sheep so it's one of his favorites. It has also given us a chance to talk about where milk comes from, silk, eggs, honey, etc. I think he is still struggling to understand the page with the dream at the end but he will get there. For now, it creates a great learning opportunity with one of his favorite songs and it's a fun book to read at bedtime.

We checked this book out from the library and if was an instant hit at our house. The illustrations are beautiful and I loved the storyline. I bought a used copy from this seller and I'm totally impressed. It's in perfect condition other than one tiny rip in a page that's at the bottom and hardly noticeable.

What starts out with the familiar refrain of Baa Baa Black Sheep takes a new turn when you turn to page two of this well written picture book. That's when the small boy asks the sheep "Does wool make a blanket for my bed?" "Yes sir, yes sir the black sheep said". We then get to meet a goose, red hen, bee, and cow and learn what sounds each animal makes and what each animal provides. It's a lot to pack in to what is really a very short story, but the author does it with such skill you don't realize just how much learning is going on. At the end we learn where each animal beds down, and finally we see our inquisitive young boy dreaming along with all his farm animal friends.

This book is a pleasure to read and while I feel the illustrations are perfect for appealing to the toddler/young preschool crowd, the young boy's expressionless face did not appeal to me at all and struck the only sour note in what was otherwise a perfect composition. Don't let that discourage you from choosing this book as a very charming introduction to farm animals, their functions and their sounds. A great bedtime read that is also appropriate for story time. Recommended.

Taking a twist on the "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep" nursery rhyme, a young boy asks the farm animals at his barn about the things that they do. From the black sheep to the brown cow, the author reveals what these animals actually do. Young children, ages 3-6 will enjoy this story about familiar farm animals.
