Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com Review
Jan Brett's trademark illustrations--detailed watercolors bordered by intricate needlepoint patterns---capture the charm and mischief of this Scandinavian-style folk tale set in Denmark. Each wide woven margin shows a hint in miniature of upcoming events: Hedgie crawling under Henny's brooding basket, or the enraged Tomten after being outwitted. Young readers will love guessing what Hedgie has up his proverbial sleeve, and will rejoice with Henny at the unusual hatching of her first brood of chicks. A warm, humorous, 100 percent satisfying story by the creator of many picture book favorites, such as The Hat and The Mitten. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

About the Author
As a child, Jan Brett decided to be an illustrator and spent many hours reading and drawing. She says, "I remember the special quiet of rainy days when I felt that I could enter the pages of my beautiful picture books. Now I try to recreate that feeling of believing that the imaginary place I'm drawing really exists. The detail in my work helps to convince me, and I hope others as well, that such places might be real."
As a student at the Boston Museum School, she spent hours in the Museum of Fine Arts. "It was overwhelming to see the room-size landscapes and towering stone sculptures, and then moments later to refocus on delicately embroidered kimonos and ancient porcelain," she says. "I'm delighted and surprised when fragments of these beautiful images come back to me in my painting."
Travel is also a constant inspiration. Together with her husband, Joe Hearne, who is a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Jan visits many different countries where she researches the architecture and costumes that appear in her work. "From cave paintings to Norwegian sleighs, to Japanese gardens, I study the traditions of the many countries I visit and use them as a starting point for my children's books."
With over thirty four million books in print, Jan Brett is one of the nation's foremost author illustrators of children's books. Jan lives in a seacoast town in Massachusetts, close to where she grew up. During the summer her family moves to a home in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2024Liked the illustrations and sneak-peek visual messages in the borders.
The content messages were all important including: noticing then helping another in distress (awareness) Finding a clever and resourceful way to solve thievery. Happy ending of new friendship and joy of new life.
I loved this book and bought 3 of them for children in my life.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2024I loved the illustrations of the main characters along with the clever story that teaches readers how to be appreciative with what we already have in our lives. Great images once again and with beautiful vibrant colours. I admired Jan Brett's ability in depicting facial expressions this time, which is quite difficult to achieve. Images have been made with great patience and love.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2019My mom has collected a big library for us over the years, and some of my favorite authors for children's books are Jan Brett, Patricia Polacco, Bill Peet, Chris van Dusen, and Kevin Henkes. Hedgie's Surprise is my favorite book that Jan Brett wrote, and I think it should get a blue ribbon. It has sophisticated language: "Don't worry, Henny," Hedgie told her. "Now, it's time for my surprise." The book has memorable characters and is a great story. That's why it's re-readable. Jan Brett's art is unique and unlike anyone else's. Her books have little pictures on each side of each spread with what looks like tapestries around them. The story is about a hen who doesn't want the tomten to take her eggs and a little hedgehog who tries to help her. He succeeds! At first the author makes you a little worried that the hen might lose all her eggs, but it turns out alright in the end. This is a book I think you should have in your library at home.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2020my nephews and I enjoyed reading this book. We have some poultry, so Henny and Hedgie were greatly appreciated! Jan Brett's books are so beautifully illustrated, we always enjoy them. This is the 3rd or 4th one we've gotten.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2015This is a darling book. I read it every year to my preschool class for letter H. The kids love Jan Brett books. The characters are cute and it has a little lesson in the story. Each page has small pictures showing what is going on elsewhere in the story. One of Jan Brett's beloved characters is Hedgie the Hedgehog. This year my friend and her daughter brought in their pet hedgehog to visit the class. I bought this copy for the kids to sign and give to them as a thank you. You can't go wrong with a Jan Brett book.

Nella storia la gallina piange perche' raccolgono le sue uova mentre lei vorrebbe dei pulcini...Potrebbe non essere il libro ideale per I vostri bimbi se in famiglia mangiate regolarmente uova. Perfetto invece se siete vegani.
