Christmas Farm: A Christmas Holiday Book for Kids Paperback – Picture Book, October 8, 2013

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 560 ratings

“This lovely tale celebrates intergenerational friendship and determination, growth and nature, and the joy of the holiday season.”  —School Library Journal

When Wilma decides her garden needs a new beginning, she gathers string, scissors, shovels, sixty-two dozen balsam seedlings, and Parker, her five-year-old neighbor. Year after year, Wilma and Parker nurture their trees, keeping careful count of how many they plant, how many perish, and how many grow to become fine, full Christmas trees. A cozy, holiday read-aloud and a lyrical way to usher in the month of December.

Review

"Ray tells her story in simple, lyrical language that focuses on the trees and their growth. She doesn’t have to spell out that Wilma and Parker are great friends and that shared goals and work forge strong bonds. All those aspects of the nuanced plot are apparent in the spare story and in the beautifully understated watercolor illustrations."--

This is a wonderful Christmas story. I purchased 10 Christmas stories this year, and this was among my favorites. Its a story about a lady who wants to grow something useful on her land, and decides on Christmas trees, and her little neighbor boy helps her plant the 6 dozen trees. The story goes through the process of growing Christmas trees and follows the lady and boy through the 10 year process, and ends where they sell the trees before Christmas. It is a wonderful book to read to children before going to a Christmas farm and choosing our own tree. Highly recommended.

It's a simple sweet story of a woman planting Christmas trees with the neighbor boy. I loved the illustrations and the story. I bought this randomly after seeing it on a YT channel and I do not regret it :)

This was a fun story! Like other reviewers mentioned the math of calculating number of trees is good for mental math practice for the kids. The story itself is also sweet and great to see the little boy helping his neighbor with her endeavors.

This is a wonderful book for grade school age kids! We have read it almost every night for months now and my kids look forward to it every night! The repetition of certain words makes this a fantastic book for building early reading skills, but it is so well written that as an adult you really don't notice the repetition like you do with many other children's books. I think it's simply genius how subtle the repetition is in this sweet story. The illustrations are marvelous and the story is charming! Buy this book! It's one of the most charming and useful children's books I've ever found.

This is a gorgeous book. It is beautifully illustrated and the story is lovely. I especially liked the frequent reminders that the little boy and the trees were the same age. That was a sweet detail. The only concern I would mention is the recommended ages - 4 to 7 years/Preschool to 3rd grade. I think age 4 might be slightly young to sit still for a story of this length, but it probably depends on the child. I just thought parents should be aware that not all four-year-olds could sit long enough to finish this story in one sitting. It is 40 pages long, with most pages containing a full paragraph. However, I think for children of an appropriate age this could be a favorite for many years.
