The Town of Turtle Hardcover – Picture Book, April 10, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
When a solitary turtle decides to make some renovations to his shell, he doesn’t have a blueprint, only a dream for a better life. He starts by building a deck—though he figures the deck could use a fireplace. And a fireplace needs wood, so naturally, he plants a garden. But it isn’t really a garden without a pond . . . Soon, Turtle can barely recognize his own shadow.
Finally satisfied with the intricate world upon his back, word begins to spread of the magical “Town of Turtle,” attracting newcomers from far and wide. All are welcome in Turtle’s town, where life is a little less lonely, if only you come out of your shell.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2021I don’t know how this doesn’t have more reviews. We found this at a book shop in Ann Arbor when my son was 2 or 3 and even now, at 6 years old it’s one of our absolute favorite stories. The words flow with poetic flair, “turtle slept the sleep of a broken pocket watch” The story grows more and more meaningful over time and the illustrations are magical. Of the hundreds of children books we have in our home, this one will make the memory box, it’s perfectly beautiful in every way
- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2019My son and I love everything about this wonderfully quirky book. The text and imagery are dreamy, deep, mysteriously abstract, offbeat, forward thinking, and delightful. This book made me excited about the future of picture books!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2018You will love Catia Chien's beautiful illustrations and Michelle Cuevas' moving words about a turtle who plants a garden with trees, then a pond, then lily pads, slowly creating a world. A world that all are invited to. I appreciated the timely message and creativity. This would be a great book to read to your kids before bed.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2018This is a spellbinding book. The words are poetic, surprising, wonderful. And the pictures? Perfection. I loved it, and I'll be on the lookout for more books from the author and illustrator.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2019The book was strange at best. My 3 year old grabbed this book today from the library and I read it to both her and my 8 year old tonight before bed. The book talks about turtles only friend being his shadow, then the story goes on to say how turtle is painting his walls. Are these the walls inside of his shell or outside. The wording is really confusing. Most of the illustrations are nice but a few are confusing. All in all it’s a super weird book and probably not a good book to gift to someone else.
