Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Fly Guy and his owner, Buzz, are back! This time they’re on a field trip to the aquarium. With a bit of trepidation (which he loses along the way), Fly Guy agrees to tour the shark exhibit with Buzz acting as guide. Mixing photos of fish tanks with notebook-lined journal pages, taped pictures, and handwritten notes about the predators, Buzz introduces readers to a sampling of the more than 400 kinds of sharks. Readers will learn interesting facts about the skeleton, teeth, skin, food, speed, and life cycle. An added plus for young readers is that when unfamiliar words appear, Arnold supplies an in-text pronunciation inside of parentheses. Near the end, it appears there are more facts to tell than pages on which to tell them. As a result, some facts and photos seem crowded. Slick paper and good photos add to the considerable appeal of the package. Preschool-Grade 2. --J. B. Petty

Born in Elmira, New York, Tedd grew up in a family of six with three brothers. His family lived on a farm in Pennsylvania for several years then returned to Elmira until Tedd was ten years old. His father's work then required that they move to Gainesville, Florida. There, Tedd's first art lessons in an abandoned dentist's office over the Happy Hour pool hall eventually led to a fine arts degree from the University of Florida. He and his wife, Carol, started their family in Tallahassee where Tedd worked as a commercial illustrator. Their first son, Walter, inspired his breakthrough picture book, No Jumping on the Bed! His second son, William, stars in No More Water in the Tub!, a sequel to his first book. He has now published more than 100 books as author and illustrator. When not working on his books, Tedd's interests include sketching, reading, travel and building things--like a garden shed and a tree house. He says, "The inspiration to begin writing and illustrating for children came from my wife, Carol. As a kindergarten teacher, she collected picture books. I was attracted to their colorful pages and the way the words and pictures played with each other, much like the captioned cartoons I had drawn when I was young. I love hearing from my readers! Kids keep me on my toes and they ask a lot of questions. The number one question seems to be, 'Where do you get your ideas?' It's also the hardest question to answer because every idea is different. Some ideas seem to pop out of thin air--while I'm driving down the road or taking a walk. Others come from reading or research. But most of my early ideas came from our boys and the things they would do and say. For instance, one time when our first son, Walter, was five years old, I found him lying on the couch, looking pale as a ghost and clutching a Bible to his chest. He was praying! When I asked what was wrong, he wouldn't answer. In fact, he wouldn't even open his mouth. My wife, Carol, finally coaxed a response from him: he pointed inside his mouth. Carol exclaimed, 'You have a loose tooth!' Walter's eyes nearly popped out with fright. We quickly assured him that it was perfectly okay for his tooth to come loose and that a new one would replace it. But Carol and I looked at each other and realized that despite all our efforts to be good parents, we had somehow completely forgotten to warn Walter that teeth fall out! He had thought he was falling apart! I made a little note in my journal; then ten years later, I expanded that memory into my book Parts." Tedd's current Fly Guy series has twice received the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award Honor and is approaching 20 books. He is also co-author and illustrator of a new series featuring the Noodleheads, Mac and Mac, also the recipient of a Theodor Seuss Geisel Award Honor. Tedd Arnold now lives beside a lake near Gainesville, Florida, with his wife, Carol, and their two cats, Lou and Kitty-doo.

I just have to say that for the 3 star reviews on here - those people seem to not understand what they were buying. This book is presented as a nonfiction text, with "straightforward facts" about sharks, photographs, and is published by Scholastic REFERENCE. It was never intended to be a "usual Fly Guy Book". It is part of a new series supposed to help bridge kids from fiction to nonfiction texts by using a familiar fictional character to "host" the facts.

I think that this series will be excellent for children who love Fly Guy to expand their interests into informational books which are important to read. After all, informational texts are what kids need to be able to comprehend more and more the older they get. (How many fiction books were required reading in college?) This book does exactly what it is intended to do - entices children to read nonfiction by putting a popular fictional character on the cover.

I began reading the Fly Guy series to my boys. After they were done with the books I took them to school to share with my students who love them as much as my family did. Thanks to book fairs I've collected the whole series. I was happy when Fly Guy introduced an informational book. They're great starting points for my students who have difficulty with longer text or identifying important facts. These books are great and continue to be the most borrowed books in my library. Sharks is a welcome addition that may soon need replacing because so many have read it since I brought it to school in May!
We're looking forward to the next installments.

Super Noah loves to read & Fly Guy is one of his absolute favorite characters.

We discovered the Fly Guy series by Tedd Arnold while visiting our local library last year. Super Noah, who was just starting 1st grade, was able to read these books all on his own. Listening to him read, laughing hysterically, it was music to my ears.

And now, a year later, we own every book in the series & Super Noah still loves Fly Guy.

If you are not familiar with the Fly Guy series, it's a super sweet story about a boy named Buzz, Buzz is trying to find himself a new pet. Once Buzz & Fly Guy meet, so begins a beautiful relationship full of adventure & giggles.

A fly as a pet you ask? Well, you will have to read the books to see where that leads (:

Yes, I admit, Superdad & I find ourselves laughing along with Super Noah during reading time.

We too love the Fly Guy series.

My youngest (five) is an avid Fly Guy fan and she took to his introduction to sharks like, well, you know. In typically engaging fashion, and with an early reader vocabulary, Arnold and Fly Guy provide a whirlwind tour of sharks and their environs in a perfect K and pre-K chunk. Mixing Fly Guy into photographs, FG is a charming and humorous tour guide. My daughter learned some things while not being overwhelmed with too many things. It looks like this is the first of a series of science-themed FG adventures and if so, we eagerly await the next one while applauding (and rereading) this one.

Our 5 and 9 year old boys really enjoy reading the Fly Guy book collection. They learn so much from these exciting books, we as adults learn a lot from it too.

Great book! My son likes it but doesn’t love it because he says it’s a “facts” book. Informative? Yes! But not great for bed time stories.

Fly Guy's nonfiction books are well done. The pictures are vivid. The wording is interesting, informative, and easy to understand. I have a 4 and 7 year old that are riveted.
