In this sequel to the beloved Newbery Medal-winning classic Island of the Blue Dolphins, readers can learn what happened to Karana after she left the island.

For years, Zia has dreamt of going to the Island of the Blue Dolphins to find her aunt Karana, her dead mother’s sister who was left alone on the island nearly twenty years earlier. It’s the reason Zia came to the Santa Barbara Mission in the first place. The reason she braves the treacherous ocean waters again and again to rescue Karana. But every time she tries, she fails.

Finally, Zia’s aunt is brought to her. Finally, her greatest dream has come true. But sometimes the reality is not nearly as sweet as the dream.

Zia tells those facts so far as they are known from the point of view of a girl who has her own story to tell.

Like Island of the Blue Dolphins, Scott O'Dell's Zia is a gripping tale of survival, strength, and courage.

This author takes historical people and events and creates a story to go along with it. My son, who is 12, loves this author so much we have purchased every book written by him. They have kept his attention, and he has reread several. My son's time and energy going into a book instead of an electronic device, can't ask for much more!

Not bad for a sequel to a classic. It handles the racism the Spanish and Yankee traders showed toward the Indians and even the bias the Indians had against those who spoke a different language. Karana is probably closer to Saint Francis than most of the friars were and Zia begins to model herself after her aunt to the extent that she leaves when Mission life no longer suits her. She is her own woman.

I chose this rating because this brought closure to the story of the Island of the Blue Dolphins. I was thrilled to learn more if the History of the people who lived there and their outcomes.

You will find out. Interesting sequel to a classic. Though educational about the history of the CA mission system as to how it relates to the indigenous people, it was not nearly as exciting as Island of the Blue Dolphins.

Great book on it's own but we read it for California History. Very engaging and helpful to convey a little of life on the missions in the 1800's. Although we needed to read additional materials to get a better picture of that very life, we did really enjoy reading about history in literature!
