Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Ludwig Bemelmans was a painter, illustrator, and writer for both children and adults. A world traveler, he spent most of his time in New York City or Paris. The original inspiration for Madeline was the result of his bicycle accident on an island of France. Hospitalized after being hit by the only car on the island, Mr. Bemelmans recalled, “The sisters in that small hospital wore large, starched white hats that looked like the wings of a giant butterfly. In the room next to mine was a little girl who had had her appendix out. In the ceiling over my bed was a crack ‘that had the habit of sometimes looking like a rabbit.’” A year later, back in New York City, he penned the first draft of Madeline on the backs of menus in Pete’s Tavern. The Madeline books rank among the most-honored children’s books series. Madeline was named a Caldecott Honor Book and the first of its five sequels, Madeline’s Rescue, won the Caldecott Medal and was a New York Times Outstanding Book of the Year. Mr. Bemelmans died in 1962, after completing Madeline’s Christmas.

Ludwig Bemelmans (April 27, 1898-October 1, 1962), Austro-American essayist, humorist, novelist, artist, and author of books for children, was born in Meran, in the Tyrol, in territory that was then Austrian and is now Italian. In 1914, he arrived in New York with letters of introduction to managers of several large hotels. Having worked his way up to a position as a waiter at the Ritz-Carlton, he left to enlist in the United States Army in 1917. Eventually he opened his own restaurant; only in 1934 did he turn to writing, at the suggestion of a friend in publishing who, noticing the whimsical paintings with which he covered the walls of his apartment, urged him to undertake a children's book. Hansi, the first of Bemelmans' fifteen books for children, beguiled most reviewers with its simple watercolor illustrations and nostalgic story of two children and their dog in the Austrian Tyrol. His greatest success, however, was Madeline, a rhymed picture book about a Parisian schoolgirl who becomes the envy of her classmates when her appendix is removed. Indeed, the Madeline books, of which there were five, remain the work that Bemelmans is primarily remembered for. The inspired amateurishness of the illustrations and the sophisticated doggerel verses have been an influence on later juvenile literature. Madeline's Rescue, the second book in the series, was awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1953. Bemelmans claimed to have no imagination, and all his books were the more or less direct product of his experience. He described his life as a restaurateur in Life Class and Hotel Splendide, his travels to Ecuador and Italy in The Donkey Inside and Italian Holiday, and his stint as a Hollywood screenwriter in the novel Dirty Eddie. At the time of his death he was working on the story of his childhood. Bemelmans was a genial satirist and lover of life, but a serious intent often underlay his humor, especially in his novels. A case in point is Blue Danube, a fanciful story set on an island of the Danube, the comedy of which is very much clouded by the appearance of a band of odious Nazis. A somewhat more successful novel was Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, concerning the unusual journey of an elderly Ecuadorian general from his villa in Biarritz to his home in South America. From the time of his marriage to Madeline Freund in 1935 (they had one daughter, Barbara) until his death in New York of pancreatic cancer, Bemelmans traveled, painted, and generally wrote a book or two a year. Reviewing his posthumous novel, the comic love story The Street Where the Heart Lies, Burling Lowrey in Saturday Review called Bemelmans "a superb craftsman with a sure eye for atmospheric detail and a supremely accurate ear for the speech of Adult Innocents madly in love with the unattainable.. . He was a complete original, with an absolutely unique temperament and view toward the world."

I bought this book for a friend who has a new grandbaby named Madeline, and is hoping to give her a new Madeline book every year for her birthday!! It is a cute and delightful book for any young girl (even if she can't read yet!) and especially for a family who'd like to incuculate a love of Paris, this book would be perfect! A famous book by a deceased author, it deserves to be popular for a very long time and I am glad to have read it myself, as it brings back memories of wonderful Paris!!

This story had been a favorite of mine for over 50 years. Read to every child in my family. I still like to read it as an adult. It's a nice little break from mystery novels and such. Sweet childhood memories.

The abysmal rating is not for the book itself which is wonderful. But for the Kindle version which is an abomination. Although we have the print version I wanted the Kindle version so I could do share screen over Zoom to read to grandkids who are far away. Other picture books work very well with this system. but in this one where one Kindle page can comprise up to six miniaturized print pages, it's necessary to double click each illustration and then click again to minimize it. Very cumbersome and really ruins the rhythm of the reading.

We gave this to our 18 month old great niece. Her parents tell us that she likes it and so do they.

I purchased this as a gift for my grandson. What's not to love about Carol Channing's voice? I read the Madeline books to my daughter when she was growing up, and never tired of the reading the poetry aloud. I like that Madeline (unlike Curious George who seemed to make mischievousness a virtue) was a good girl at heart.

Madeline is always getting into mischief, due to her care-free ways. I really like all of the Madeline books. As well as the Babar books, and Lyle the Crocodile books. They make life fun.

Madeline is one of my favorite little characters, and now all my granddaughters love her, too. It amazes me how fascinated the girls are by her story- now they all want to go to Paria.

This isn't even the right book first of all. This isn't Madeline and Genevieve, it's the first Madeline book. Second this isn't even a Kindle formatted book, it's just badly laid out pictures of the pages. I'm very upset because my niece has gotten into Madeline and this is the only option on Kindle. You can't even buy the cartoon movies or series because they are subscription only via paramount. I'll be going to Thrift books and buying second hand instead.

This is a charming book. It's a standard in America. Every school child knows it even after all these years. The drawings are old school but charming and the story is cute.

I hadn't realised from the description that this was a mini version so was quite surprised when it arrived. That said, it's a lovely wee book and my 3 yr old loves it.

絵本は「Mad About Madeline: The Complete Tales」が
    4つお話が重なってるのであわせて買うと良いかと思います。
