Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-6-The "Sinister Summer" is back with its third installment. Wil, Theo, and Alexander have been dropped off by strange Aunt Saffronia in her curiously disappearing car at Camp Creek. Summer camp is supposed to be fun, and everyone appears to be having exactly that. So much fun is being had by everyone that it appears unnatural-everything at Camp Creek is perfect, perfectly joyful, perfectly timed, and perfectly smiley. That's too much perfect for Theo, who is the only one able to keep her wits about her and investigate the root cause of everyone's endless joy. And where are their parents? VERDICT A strong, swirling mystery filled with humor and wit. Recommended for all readers who enjoyed the first two entries.α(c) Copyright 2011. PHENOMENAL!!!!

PHENOMENAL!!!!
I just fall more & more in love with this series each book I read. This is the 3rd book, & it was absolutely PHENOMENAL! This 1 might seem the most scary because of how over the top NORMAL everything appears lol. The kookiness & weirdness of these is just so great. Some amazing messages in this 1 especially, & I think Theo & Alexander learned a lot about themselves & each other, & had some great character growth/development in here. Another great adventure, & so many twists-we learned some very surprising new info, but still so many questions! So eager to keep adventuring with these amazing kids to all their sinister destinations to learn more & more! HIGHLY recommend! So excited for the 4th book that comes out in May! Another STUNNING cover by Hannah Peck too!💜

This is one of my new favorite middle-grade series! It's described as a mix between Scooby-Doo and A Series of Unfortunate Events and I would say that is 100% accurate!

Theo and Alexander are a little bit at odds in this story, Theo loves everything about the camp, and Alexander hates it. While I find my personality runs somewhere in between the twins, I'm definitely more of an Alexander... I prefer reading and watching, and there are a lot of things that I want to.. want to do if you know what I mean. So when he arrives at the camp and is just having the worst time, and watching his sister have the best time I really felt for him, and I loved getting more from Theo's point of view when she realizes all the things that her brother has to deal with daily, and how much she loves who he is and doesn't want him to be anything different.

In the third book, we find the Sinister-Winterbottom's arriving at Camp-Creek, they are only planning on being there long enough to track down Edgarent and Quincy and the items that were stolen in the last book Vampiric Vacation. However, the Camp has other plans... The twins are told to expect a perfectly normal summer camp experience. Tie-dye, rope swings, buffet-style dining, and campfires filled with smores! This all sounds perfect for Theo is the braver more adventurous of the twins, however, this all sounds absolutely horrible to Alexander, whose idea of a good time is curling up with a good book, eating things that are prepackaged so there is no chance at contamination, and cheering for Theo as she has fun. And even though they are there to snoop and find Quincy, Theo wants to have a bit of fun too... but when she notices that Alexander is acting like a completely different person, she knows it's up to her to figure out what's going on, fix her brother... and hopefully escape.

I absolutely can't wait to continue this series and see what kind of place the Sinister-Winterbottom's will be going to next!

I'm really enjoying this fun middle grade series. Theo and Alexander continue on their summer of simmering tension and mystery, this time at summer camp. White continues to do a spectacular job enboding the different ways of feeling and responding to adventure, tension, and the world in general with her two very different and very endearing lead characters. As someone with an inner monologue that sounds a lot like Alexander's, I'm particularly fond of his arc in this edition.

Camp Creepy is the Parent Trap-Series of Unfortunate Events mashup you didn’t know you needed! Continuing on their journey to find their missing parents, Theo, Alexander, Will and Edgar find themselves at a perfectly *gasp* normal summer camp navigating classic summer activities like canoeing, team sports, arts and crafts, and of course, the quintessential summer camp activity, mind-dying…er…I mean…tie-dying!!

Vampiric Vacation was a touch too slow for my taste but Camp Creepy has officially redeemed the series. After a dreary detour at the world’s most dreadful daycare, I am happy to report that (almost) everything I loved most about Wretched Waterpark is officially back. Fingers crossed that the delightful underworld vibes from book one will finally make a reappearance. Only one way to find out! See you at the Menacing Manor!

Creative, descriptive, and well-written with a twist of mayhem!
My favorite in the series thus far!

Edgaren't is up to his old tricks again, but the Sinister-Winterbottoms aren't going to let him get away with it, even if they have to face their biggest challenge yet: an extremely normal summer camp. While Theo is exited to finally get to do reckless things like zip lining and jumping off a rope swing, Alexander wishes, not for the first time, that he was a little more normal and a little less careful. But how normal is too normal? With the help of some special tie-dye, the family is about to find out.

This series is getting less funny as it goes along, but I'm liking the characters and the mystery more and more. It's a touch frustrating that we still don't really know what's going on, but big things have been revealed, and the next adventure is shaping up to be even more exciting.
