From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3–Jackie Robinson's daughter tells a story that takes place during the family's first Christmas in Brooklyn. Not everyone was happy to see a black family move in to the neighborhood. Young Steve Satlow, an avid Dodger fan, and his parents are exceptions; they welcome the Robinsons and become friends. On Christmas Eve, Steve is helping the Robinsons decorate their tree when Jackie learns that the Satlows don't have one. He shows up at their home with a tree for Steve, and his wife comes later with extra ornaments. They then learn that the Satlows are Jewish. What could have been an awkward moment becomes a lesson in tolerance and friendship. Lewis's lovely paintings do a fine job of conveying the time and place in this heartwarming story.Virginia Walter, UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies

From Booklist

Beginning with Stealing Home (1996), the author has introduced children to her father, Jackie Robinson, in a series of warmhearted picture books that humanize the legend. Based on actual events, this latest title begins with the Robinsons move to Brooklyn, where the community petitions against the African American familys arrival. Robinson tells the story from the perspective of a young Jewish boy, Steve Satlow, whose mother reminds him of the persecution that forced his Russian grandparents to seek religious freedom in America. Steve is thrilled when his family befriends the Robinsons, and he gets to watch the famous second baseman in action. In December, he helps the Robinsons decorate their Christmas tree, which starts a series of miscommunications between the two families that ends warmly. The realities of the racial prejudice that the Robinsons faced are a strong undercurrent in this story, which reaches for larger themes of cultural and religious tolerance, and Lewis sensitive watercolor portraits capture the family dynamics and further showcase Robinson as both a great athlete and as the neighbor next door who makes mistakes like anyone else. Grades K-3. --Gillian Engberg

"Jackie's Gift - A True Story of Christmas, Hanukkah and Jackie Robinson" is a delightful Children's Christmas Picture book based on the true story of Baseball's famous Jackie Robinson and his family moving to Brooklyn, New York and sharing their Holiday Spirit with a Jewish Family in 1948.

This 8 3/4 inch by 11 1/4 inch hardback book has 30 pages. Almost every other page is a full page full color painting by Caldecott Honor artist, E. B. Lewis. The full color paintings enhance the storyline quite well and vividly portray the characters and their feelings and actions. The full color pictorial cover and matching dust jacket show a smiling Jackie Robinson placing an angel on top of his Christmas tree with his Jewish neighbor's son son looking on. The last page of the book is a biographical sketch about the events in this book.

It is the Year 1948 and Jackie Robinson and his family move to Brooklyn, New York where he is playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers. When many of the white families in the neighborhood heard that a black family was moving in, many signed petitions to keep them out. One of the families who opposed the petition drive was the Satlow family - a Jewish family who were the descendents of persecuted Jews. Steve Satlow lived for baseball. Steve finds out that Jackie Robinson and his family are moving on his street and that they would be his neighbors. Never in his wildest imagination did he think he would be living two doors away from his baseball hero. After a winning season with the Brooklyn Dodgers, it is time for Christmas. The Robinsons are busy decorating their tree and Steve Satlow is anxiously helping to decorate it. The Robinsons ask Steve if his family has decorated their tree yet. Steve said, "We don't have one," with a heavy sigh. Later that day, Jackie Robinson rapped on his Jewish neighbor's door with a Christmas tree in hand. When Mrs. Satlow answered the door, she was quite surprised to see the Christmas tree that Jackie brought with him. Out of the kindness of Jackie's heart and in the true spirit of Christmas, Jackie bought a tree for Steve and his family. There is only one problem! The Satlows are Jewish and do not decorate Christmas trees. The moment becomes quite awkward but also rather humorous. You will want to read the book to find out about the ending of the story and how the Jewish Satlow family handles the Christmas tree.

This is a wonderful book to help teach children about respect and appreciation for other religions. The story also reinforces the true Spirit of Giving at Christmas.

Here's a Jackie Robinson story you may not have heard. _Jackie's Gift_ tells of the friendship between the baseball player and a young boy in his new neighborhood. Written by Robinson's daughter, the story hints at the challenges Jackie faced and describes a wonderfully human experience in the life of a great man. With messages of acceptance and kindness, inclusiveness and caring, gracious giving and equally gracious receiving, it's a wonderful story for whatever midwinter holiday you celebrate.
