Meet Me at the Moon Hardcover – March 29, 2012
When Mama Elephant must leave Little One to ask the skies for rain, the young elephant is worried. Who will care for Little One? Who will sing Mama's special songs? When will she return?
Mama is very reassuring - Little One will hear her song on the wind and feel her love in the warmth of the sun, and, after the rains come, they will meet where the moon sets.
Exquisitely illustrated and supremely comforting, Meet Me at the Moon is a mother and child love story to be enjoyed again and again.

About the author

Gianna Marino was born in San Francisco and spent her early years galloping horses through Golden Gate Park. Her explorations expanded after graduating from high school and in order to afford her many journeys, Gianna had several jobs at once: apprenticing a muralist, a jewelry designer, a product designer and driving horse carriages through the park. Gianna explored many corners of the world, from Africa and Asia, to the South Pacific and Europe, to crewing on sailboats in the high seas. Gianna finally landed a full-time freelance gig designing toys for children, but after several years in a corporate box with no windows, she left for good and began painting, illustrating and writing books for children.
She has written over a dozen award-winning books for children, including "Meet Me at the Moon", "Too Tall Houses", "Following Papa's Song", "Night Animals", "Night Animals Need Sleep Too" and "If I Had a Horse". Gianna is a New York Times best-selling illustrator of "Don’t Let Them Disappear", written by Chelsea Clinton.
Though she still wanders the world, Gianna now lives in Southern Colorado on an elk reserve and works full-time writing and illustrating.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2024My son and I love this book so much I’m on the hunt for another hardcover copy. It’s just a beautifully illustrated, lovely story about how grow ups have to go but they come back.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2012I couldn't get all the way through this beautifully illustrated book without tears. I read it to my three year old grandson who wanted to turn the pages faster than I wanted to. This is one of those children's books that adults will cherish. The mama elephant must leave her baby and climb a high mountain to ask for rain because the land is parched. She poetically and lovingly describes how her child will know that she is still with him in spirit, and she does return at the end!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2020My little one LOVES this book, and so do we. It is high quality and feels great in hand. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story is touching. Lots of animals and other things illustrated on each page so there are a lot of opportunities for teaching vocabulary as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2015My 3yr old granddaughter is absolutely in love with her little piggy. She gives it kisses and talks to it all the time. Haha.....she carries it everywhere, even puts it in her little baby stroller. It's a plactic/rubber material so she can't break it or hurt herself if it's dropped. I also purchased the little (My pink piggy bank) book that was recommended with it and am looking forward to story time (with her new baby piggy of course). I'm very happy with it..... nice quality and cute appearance. You never know what little one's are going to take to so this was a pleasant suprise. Would recommend
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2020My beloved mother passed recently and I used this book as a symbol of our love and our belief that we would one day see each other again. I read it to her at the funeral service, although we had been saying “I’ll meet you at the moon” to each other for a long time before she passed. I then placed the book in her casket. I have my own copy to always re-read, and remember...It is simply a lovely book that expresses the deep love between a mother and child...very, very touching.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2013The illustrations are beautiful, really stunning. The story is sweet, but a little sappy and falls short of conveying the deeper meaning that it seems to be striving for. Mama elephant loves baby elephant, but their land is dry, so Mama elephant must leave to ask the sky for more rain. Other members of the African plains look out for Baby elephant and Mama elephant tells Baby that he will know her love by the moon. After the rain falls, Mama elephant and Baby are reunited. The story is a sweet but awkward message about the depths of a mother's love. Despite the shortcomings of the prose, the beautiful illustrations make this picture book totally worthwhile.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2019This book was a favorite when my son (now 7) was 2-4. It made him feel all the feels. His tender little heart would fill with angst and he'd snuggle in closer every time the mama elephant was separated from her baby, and relief would wash over him each time they reunite at the end.
We purchased this second copy to share with his baby sister, but when he opened the bubble envelope and saw it, he climbed into my lap with his 23 knees and elbows and we read it again together. He corrected me recently and told me that bazillion isn't a real number, (he's one of those kids) but this book deserves a bazillion stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2021Beautiful book for young children with a message about Love for all. Book arrived ahead of schedule in excellent condition with a personal note of thanks. Such a nice touch! Would highly recommend this seller.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Amazing story coupled with moving imagery
This book has it all - a great story, fantastic illustrations, and the power to keep little ones coming back for more. This is a nightly favourite with my two and four year old. The text is simple but very meaningful and touches on many key concepts that children seem to gravitate towards. It is about a little elephant who has to be separated for a short time from his mother. He asks how he will communicate with her and she gives him many abstract ways to know she is present. It sounds like a hard book for kids to digest, but the way it is written makes the concept of love very easy to understand in a beautifully, meaningful way. Love, love, love it! I am looking forward to this author's next piece of work.

My 2 year old loves this book. It is a beautiful story and the pictures are very well done. We have even created our own version of the calling song.
