White Snow, Bright Snow: A Caldecott Award Winner Hardcover – Picture Book, January 1, 1988
* Caldecott Medal Winner * ALA Notable Book *
The classic Caldecott Medal–winning picture book about a neighborhood transformed by a delightful snowfall, from the legendary picture book duo Alvin Tresselt and Roger Duvoisin.
When the first flakes fell from the grey sky, the postman and the farmer and the policeman and his wife scurried about doing all the practical things grown-ups do when a snowstorm comes. But the children laughed and danced, and caught the lacy snowflakes on their tongues.
All the wonder and delight a child feels in a snowfall is caught in the pages of this book—the frost ferns on the windowsill, the snowman in the yard and the mystery and magic of a new white world.
Roger Duvoisin's pictures in soft blue half-tones with brilliant splashes of yellow and red emphasize the happiness and humor as well as the poetic quality of the text.
First published in 1947, this classic picture book won the 1948 Caldecott Medal and was the first of eighteen picture book collaborations by Alvin Tresselt and Roger Duvoisin.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2014White Snow, Bright Snow depicts the simplicity of the winter season’s natural progression that readers of all ages will enjoy. Having been published in 1947, author Alvin Tresselt’s prose and Roger Duvoisin’s unique illustrations remains to be a classic for readers that encountered the book as a child in grade school. Because of its timeless quality, although with a few minor mentions of references that appear somewhat out of date or before a reader’s time, the story is enchanting.
Tresselt’s rhythmic prose flows with much clarity capturing the subtle anticipation of the first snowflakes that appear on the ground and proceeds into the night. The story continues as the snow settles on the ground and morning comes as the main characters begin their regular routines for the day from the postman gathering his rubber galoshes to the farmer reading his shovel to pave a path to his barn while children playfully making snowmen and snow forts. Indeed, Tresselt’s inspiration for the story sprang from his experience while walking along a snow-covered street one wintry night. Duvoisin colorfully exhibits all of these scenes in the book with a few shades of gray, black and white, orange, yellow, and blue; the illustrations appear like strokes of paint stressing the distinctness of each image.
The story concludes with the melting of a snowman and the beginning of spring with the sight of a robin and cows about on the farm. And as one recollects their childhood memories similar to the playfulness depicted in the book of first or reoccurring experience of seeing snow, what has changed since 1947? Plenty but White Snow, Bright Snow, purely shows the beauty of nature.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2018My grandson checked this book out from the library in pre-school. When it was time to bring it back to school, he tried to tell me it was "his" and not the "library's" book. We looked at the library sticker on the book and even when he admitted that it was a library book he did not want to let it go. So, I told him that we would order his own copy. He happily returned the book with the promise that he would soon get his own copy. When the book arrived he was overjoyed, to say the least. He was most happy to see that it did not have a library sticker and was indeed "HIS BOOK"! (He is 4 1/2)

Have always held a special feeling for snowy days. There’s something about the peacefulness of the first snow. The story has stayed with me for many years and I’m thrilled To have my own copy.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2013I used to read this book when I was a child...it was my mother's from her childhood. Sure wish I had that one. I was very happy to find a copy for my book collection...even if it is a little bit updated as I don't recall there being much color in the original one my mother had.
