Advocate for peace and nonviolent revolutionary Gandhi is the 12th hero in the New York Times bestselling picture book biography series for ages 5 to 8.

As a young man in India, Gandhi saw firsthand how people were treated unfairly. Refusing to accept injustice, he came up with a brilliant way to fight back through quiet, peaceful protest. He took his methods with him from South Africa back to India, where he led a nonviolent revolution that freed his country from British rule. Through his calm, steady heroism, Gandhi changed everything for India and inspired civil rights movements all over the world, proving that the smallest of us can be the most powerful.

This friendly, fun biography series inspired the PBS Kids TV show
Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum. One great role model at a time, these books encourage kids to dream big. Included in each book are:

   •
A timeline of key events in the hero’s history
   •
Photos that bring the story more fully to life
   •
Comic-book-style illustrations that are irresistibly adorable
   •
Childhood moments that influenced the hero
   •
Facts that make great conversation-starters
   •
A virtue this person embodies: Gandhi's commitment to peace is celebrated in this biography

You’ll want to collect each book in this dynamic, informative series!

Read the bestselling series, one real hero at a time! The perfect graduation gift, this book of heroes compiles the most inspirational content from the New York Times bestselling Ordinary People Change the World series. An ordinary Muslim girl who wanted to attend school and who refused to stop protesting for her rights even after being attacked by a powerful group in Pakistan who wanted women to remain in the shadows. One of America's greatest civil rights heroes who always spoke up about loving other human beings and doing what’s right. A young Jewish girl growing up in Brooklyn, inspired by books, past female trailblazers, and her mother to make the world a better, more just place to be. Anne Frank kept a journal as she and her family went into hiding during the holocaust, and her writing still inspires people today.

Another stellar book by Brad Meltzer. This is my favorite way to learn history, and to share the stories with my grandchildren, who love them, too. Brad's stories show us how one person who cares enough can make a difference in the world. Brad Meltzer is our family's favorite author. There is nothing as much fun as when the book arrives, and we all gather on the couch together to enjoy it. So not only do we learn history, but the children learn how wonderful reading it. And the way Brad writes the books makes them great for the children and the adults. Another hit, Brad!

Our son (about to turn 8) LOVES the “I am” books. This one did not disappoint. These books tell the stories of amazing people in kid-friendly ways, but while staying true to the tough subjects they cover. Well done!

He can read them himself, but mostly a grown up reads the main text and he reads the “bubbles”.

The whole series by Brad Metzler has been wonderful. Educational and fun for my 7 yo and 4 yo. Cute art, well written, provides what I feel is a good basic understanding of the important role these historical figures played. Hits the highlights without boring young children. Both boys love to read them. Nice change of pace from all of the star wars ans superhero books they usually read.

I bought this for my students so they could read about the lives of famous people from the time they were children. My third grade students love, love, love the I am series. To see third graders loving biographies as much as Dog-Man is most inspiring and has us on our way to wide reading for the year!

5.0 out of 5 stars Shaking the world in a gentle way
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 26, 2021
Another very well-presented book in the series that is excellent for children of all ages and entertaining for adults as well. Our 11-year old daughter has a passion for famous historical characters (as part of her interest in history). She prefers to read about a wide range of famous people of all ages and through this gains knowledge about different histories era’s and societies. She has read a lot about the obvious female heroes like Florence Nightingale, Frida Kahlo, Madame Curie ect. However she really likes to know more about other people that she came across. So this range of books with its wide selection of topics is great, she has already the version abbot Leonardo DaVinci, Walt Disney, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Her younger brother likes these books as well.

Of course it is mostly about the adorable cartoon style nature of these little books and how the relative simplicity of the storylines perfectly captures the essence of the topic. Simply brilliant. The 40-page book is very colourful and comes with a durable hard cover. And invariably the books lead to little discussions and questions about the topics afterward, which is invaluable. Like in most modern cartoon movies, these books are full of moralising themes and the storylines mostly centre around these. In the Gandhi book it is about taking a stance against materialism, non-violence and non-cooperation to battle discrimination.
We’re clearly big fans of the series , our little precious collection is growing and we look forward to a few more of these soon.

Wonderfully constructed book. Never have they tried to teach history in a way text books do. What they have taught is what Gandhi stood for. In a gentle way this book shook my child's understanding of words like non violence, non cooperation and non possession. I wish there were more Indian personalities in this series.
