A delectable picture book about midnight snacks, nocturnal creatures and unexpected generosity, inspired by lunch carts that were the predecessors of today’s food trucks and diners. For fans of The Night Gardener.

Noses sniff the air as mouthwatering smells waft down city streets, luring growling bellies to the Night Owl. Inside this elegant, horse-drawn establishment, a feathery cook works the grill, serving up tasty dishes for shift-workers and operagoers alike: a mince pie for Fox, a ham sandwich for Badger and puddings for little Possums. Mouse, a poor street sweeper, watches as the line of customers swells, ever hopeful that someone will drop a morsel of food — but Owl’s cooking is far too delicious for more than a crumb to be found. As the evening’s service winds down, weary Owl spots trembling Mouse. Has he found his own night lunch, or will he invite this small sweeper inside for a midnight feast for two?

From the imagination of two acclaimed picture book creators, together for the first time, this dreamlike picture book is a magical ode to Victorian lunch wagons. Evoking the sounds, sights, smells and tastes of the city at night,
Night Lunch reveals how empathy and kindness as well as dignity and gratitude can be found — and savored — in the most unexpected places.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 1–3—A horse drawn lunch wagon rolling down a moonlit seemingly deserted city street gathers a crowd of surprising customers in this atmospheric nocturne. To Fan's quietly rhythmic text—"Drip, drop, coffee's hot./ Noses sniff the air./ Shuffle yawn, bellies growl./ The night lunch bell is ringing"—running across the bottom, Seiferling pairs misty scenes of sidewalks and closed stores, glimmering streetlights, and dark apartment buildings. Who would be out at such a late hour? "Night Owl" proclaims the sign on the wagon with perfect truth, for the proprietor/cook turns out to be a large owl, and the queued up clientele? A badger, a fox, a family of porcupines, moths, opossums, and other wildlife sporting hats, purses, and other anthropomorphic gear place orders for mince pie, sandwiches, biscuits, or pudding. Some diners sit down to eat (the wagon is larger on the inside than outside), others take away bags. And after the rush, as the sky begins to brighten and before closing up, the owl invites a tiny mouse who has been hopefully sweeping up the crumbs to share a sumptuous high tea. A hint of mischief animates this peaceful, harmonious alternative to such noisier peeks at what animals really do at night as Gideon Sterer's The Midnight Fair, illustrated by Mariachiara Di Giorgio. VERDICT A pleaser for story time or bedtime, with distinctive art that adds quiet touches of humor and mystery.—John Edward Peters

"Fan weaves a nighttime spell of a story about kindness and sharing; Seiferling delivers a dreamlike world in beautiful sepia tones and textures, an idyllic atmosphere of light and shadows."
New York Times

"Spare, incantatory lines by Fan lay down a soothing rhythm for this nocturnal idyll . . . [a] memorable vision of a peaceable kingdom."
STARRED REVIEW, Publishers Weekly

"It’s difficult to create stories that plug directly into the looping logic of the minds of very young children that are also smart and engaging enough for adults in charge of bedtime reading. It’s equally difficult to create the kind of picture book that feels timeless, quiet, and subtle without losing the interest of children. . . . [Q]uietly engaging and carefully executed."
STARRED REVIEW, Quill & Quire

"
Night Lunch does indeed capture the spooky-gauzy enchantment of the wee hours, but readers may leave the book less inclined to shut their eyes than to head to the kitchen. . . . Readers' own senses will be stirred by Seiferling's bewitching digital art." STARRED REVIEW, Shelf Awareness

"Seiferling's use of scale and light beautifully captures [a] tender encounter. . . . The stunning illustrations bring a richness to the midnight tale that creates a mesmerizing visual world."
Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Canadian Picture Book Jury/IBBY Canada

"Adults and children alike . . . will enjoy the subtle nuances of the book and the soft warmth of the characters. [A] good choice for a pajama storytime or bedtime tale . . . a tasty little treat." —Kirkus Reviews

"A hint of mischief animates this peaceful, harmonious alternative [to] noisier peeks at what animals really do at night . . . A pleaser for story time or bedtime, with distinctive art that adds quiet touches of humor and mystery." —
School Library Journal

"[A] sweet and satisfying fantastical glimpse into what animals might be doing while humans sleep. . . . This creative and fun story should encourage children to imagine their own nighttime feasts."
—Booklist

"[D]elightful to read aloud. . . . From the street signs with their era-appropriate fonts to the wooden-wheeled lunch cart adorned with fairy lights, the nighttime scenes are cozy. . . . Night Lunch is a nice bedtime book for younger children." —CM Reviews

"[A]n expertly done book about compassion and care. Eric Fan’s spare text has a poetic, snappy quality that crackles and begs to be read aloud. . . . Together Seiferling and Fan create an unforgettable nocturnal experience, one that ultimately comforts and happily stays in the memory." —Mr. Brian's Picture Book Picks

This was a lovely story about kindness, gratitude, and empathy. Owl saw that Little Mouse was in need, and did not wait for him to ask for help, but took it upon himself to help him. Owl did not give Little Mouse the crumbs off his table, instead he invited him to have a seat at his table with a night lunch feast for two! And when the feast was done, he shared even more with Little Mouse. The dreamlike illustrations were beautiful and told the story perfectly with the words.Well done, Eric Fan and Dena Seiferling!

This book is perfect for owl loving adults as well as for children. The artwork is amazing and the story is quite lovely. I keep it out on a table and enjoy reading it regularly. I purchased the book for myself and as gifts for two friends.

I read this to my grandkids. It’s a tale of nocturnal animals, where they go for lunch, and what they might enjoy for lunch. The book is a great way to teach kids about nocturnal critters using clever anthropomorphic analogies. The artwork is delightful as well.

Gorgeous illustrations and a lovely read. Bought this as a Christmas gift for grandkid. It was very well received. The book is a feast for the eyes for the adult who has to read the book to the kid. Both should enjoy it.

I got this for my nieces for Christmas, and it was a struggle to send it on to them. It's such a cute story and the artwork is so lovely, I wanted to keep it for myself. But, because I'm an aunt of restraint, I sent it along and it was a huge hit. I'll be on the look out for future books by this writer/artist collaboration.

The illustrations reminded me of The Polar Express style graphics- magical and mysterious! However the story was never really a story to READ - too brief, hard to follow. Would have liked more of a story to follow - as I read it to my 6 yo granddaughter I could tell she didn’t quite follow what was going on.

Love the art in this book, as does our daughter. The only downside is the story does not rhyme or have any kind of rhythm so if that is something important to your child please be aware.
Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2022
Mysterious, evocative illustrations (no surprise it was top of 2022 books), though I wonder how kid friendly they actually are. Text is a bit thin and flat, despite the talent and reputation of the author.
