About the Author

KALLIE GEORGE is an author, editor and creative writing teacher living on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia. Her acclaimed works for children include The Secret Fawn, also illustrated by Elly MacKay; Duck, Duck, Dinosaur and The Doll Hospital, as well as the Heartwood Hotel series and the Crimson Twill series. Kallie has also written picture books inspired by L.M. Montgomery’s beloved Anne of Green Gables (Merry Christmas, Anne; If I Couldn’t Be Anne; and Goodnight, Anne), in addition to a chapter book series adaptation of the classic novel. As a child, Kallie loved to spend hours playing mermaid at the beach, in the forest or wherever her imagination took her.

ELLY MACKAY is an internationally recognized paper artist and award-winning children’s bookmaker. She is the author and illustrator of the picture books In the Clouds and Red Sky at Night, as well as Hidden Treasure, The Tallest Tree House and Waltz of the Snowflakes, among others. Elly’s art also graces the pages of The Secret Fawn, her first book with Kallie George, and the covers of Tundra’s reissues of L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables series and Emily of New Moon series. She lives in Owen Sound, Ontario, with her husband and two children. Not everyone satisfies their dreams of living in another time or place by looking in the pages of a book. Some choose to see the world around them remade into the world of their dreams. Kallie George introduces us to one such unnamed dreamer, who self-identifies on four occasions with the line "I am a meadow mermaid." Not only does this meadow mermaid "see the sea in the sky,/starfish in the stars,/a whale's tail in a slip of the moon," but she can "swim through oceans of grass" and "swim through choppy seas." Unfortunately, elsewhere repeated verbs, descriptions and lines seem less intentional and more unpolished. For example, the meadow mermaid feels the "waves in the wheat," then several pages later spots a shipwreck "through the waves of wheat." The twice-repeated line "I listen for the music of a mermaid a million miles away" also seemed appropriate in the second case, as it just precedes introduction of kindred spirit named Milla. The first use of the phrase seems more filler. That's all really nit-picking though, something to take a 1/2-star away when my nine-year-old says to keep it at 5. I do love the beautiful idea and author-illustrator pairing.

In fact, I have long admired Elly MacKay's magically glowing, photographed dioramas. Her first collaboration with Kallie George, The Secret Fawn, was the first picture book I'd read in a long time to remind me of how delightful childhood can be. Needless to say, I was thrilled to receive an advance copy of I Am a Meadow Mermaid as a LibraryThing early reviewer. I am pleased to add it to our library and look forward to sharing it with others.

A landlocked little girl dreams of the sea in this lovely tribute to the power of imagination. Luckily she finds a kindred spirit to share in her sea swept adventures. A nice read for anyone who likes to dream. With gorgeous artwork by Elly MacKay.

The story I Am a Meadow Mermaid by Kallie George is a fun story about a farm girl turning her surroundings into her imaginary ocean. She may not live near the ocean, but that doesn't stop her from becoming a mermaid.

This story allows children to see the value in using their imagination to keep themselves occupied. The visuals in this book even remind me of a daydream.

If you have a mermaid loving child then this is a great book to show them the power of imagination.

A cute story about being a meadow mermaid with mentions of waves and wheat and oceans of grass. I once was a little girl, growing up on a farm, with the outdoors as my playground. This book reminded me a lot of my childhood days. The illustrations are fantastic. Overall, a quick read that will hold a child's attention.

This cute, creative picture book features a young girl who lives on the prairie and likes to pretend that she is a mermaid. Instead of longing for the ocean, she relates her environment to the things she imagines, and she eventually makes a new friend to play with. This story is light on substance, but the illustrations are lovely, and it's nice to see a picture book about a rural environment that isn't about farming or farm animals.

I Am A Meadow Mermaid is a sweet children’s book. This would be a great bedtime story with the dream like hazy illustrations. This is a great story to help children who don’t live near the ocean imagine they are there! Very sweet.
