Boutavant’s colorful illustrations are well cued to Davies’s content, depicting scene-setting scientific details (smiley anthropomorphized animals notwithstanding) while enhancing the fun of discovery.

Audiences will enjoy poring over the query page for illustrative hints in the landscape and additional education value is found in the information about the “wrong answer” animals.

all the books in this series are wonderful! they teach the young readers the basic knowledge about different aspects of animals with the help of the never failing to entertain FLAPS. it's fun to read them with your cold as it asks questions and you can see your little one think and get excited when he/she gets it right - makes it for such a wonderful reading time!

My son likes to lift the flaps on this book. He thinks that it is funny to see what is under each one.

Idea of this book is what i wanted.... teaching of the where animals live (ecosystems). I liked the idea of the flaps in order to encourage children to figure the answer on their own before verifying their answer under the flap. However, the execution of the book was terrible and not effective for learning.

First off, lifting flap books are for younger kids... essentially preschoolers ages 2.5-4 years old and this book's content is very appropriate for that age range. The book shows an ecosystem and asks the kid what lives there.

Secondly, from an educational aspect, this book is not organized for the best learning outcomes. How these flap books SHOULD work: Left hand page should shows an ecosystem with a description of what is being viewed... then right hand side should have multiple animals to choose from.... the kid thinks about the answer and then lifts up the flap for the animal they think lives in that environment... the text beneath the animal reveals if their answer is right. This enforces learning, thinking, and making connections. HOWEVER this book does not do this..... it places the animals UNDER the flap WITH the answer.... so the kid does not even know which animals to pick from and has to lift every flap to see the animals which then reveals the answer.... thus no thinking occurs! I mean the tops of the flaps have random patterns on them that add NOTHING to learning.. Further the correct animal is always in the right bottom corner.... which further removes the necessity to think.

Lastly, Instead of just going on to the next animal.... the next two pages show the correct animal living in the ecosystem and gives a brief summary of their life. In general these pages are done well but at times has too much text for the age range.

Overall, the book started with a great idea but was executed so poorly I really don't think toddlers are going to learn proper science from this. Seriously, the whole book could have even been done better without even the flaps - if all four animals were listed, shown next to an ecosystem and kids were asked who lives here, made a guess, then turned page and saw the answer... that would have cost less money and worked far better and no flaps needed. The book is such a waste of a good idea... I am returning the book.

I was dubious as to why these books had been given such high ratings by other customers but as my nearly-two-year-old was going through a Mouk phase I decided to buy them and see. I have not been dissappointed. They are not only drawn beautifully but they encourage the learning of some really obscure and complicated words. My daughter delighted us tonight by reading every page and naming the sloth, ostrich, arctic fox and beaver amongst others - not your average toddler book and wonderful because of it.
