Neon Leon (Neon Animals Picture Books) Hardcover – Picture Book, July 24, 2018

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 105 ratings

Everyone knows that chameleons are the best at fitting in. But Leon is an exception. Leon is neon! In fact, he's so bright that he keeps all the other chameleons awake at night. Poor Leon is lonely, so he goes off in search of somewhere he won't be a nuisance. In this delightful interactive book filled with vibrant neon artwork, children can help Leon on his journey by counting his steps, sending him to sleep, and giving him lots of reassurance when he's feeling down. But will he ever find a place where he can fit in?

Review

Opportunities to learn colors and numbers abound. Best of all, empathetic preschoolers will realize through their interactions with Leon that sometimes, we just need a little time to find our people and our places in the world. This brilliant, heartwarming gem helps tots develop intellectually and emotionally...Interactive reading at its best.
—Kirkus Reviews

In a second picture book, a maladapted chameleon is stuck in a predicament that brings to mind Raymond Chandler’s brilliant line about a fellow looking “about as inconspicuous as a tarantula on a slice of angel food cake.” For the protagonist of “Neon Leon” (Nosy Crow, 22 pages, $14.99), the problem is color. In Britta Teckentrup’s bold illustrations, Leon stands out in electric orange against the gentler greens, grays and blues of the world. “Oh dear,” writes Jane Clarke in this chatty tale for 2- to 5-year-olds, “Leon’s so bright, he’s keeping all the other chameleons awake! What a lot of grumpy chameleons!” Will Leon find his place in the world? (Well, yes, but where?).

Hello and welcome to my Amazon page.

I started writing for children at the age of 40 when I was working as a library assistant. There were plenty of rejections before my first picture book came out in 2001, but since then I have had lots more published. It's always a huge thrill to see the illustrations for the first time.

As well as books in my own name,I have poems in many anthologies for children and I was a 'ghost writer' for the exciting Dinosaur Cove series under the pseudonym Rex Stone.

It's great fun being a full time writer and I love to visit primary schools to share my books and talk about being an author, and to run poetry and/or creative writing workshops.

Happy reading - and writing! Jane

I brought this for my new grandson, L, Based on circulation of this title from the library where I work. I’m told he loves the bright colors as his mom reads to him.

The colors are brilliant as is the book itself. We all want to fit in somewhere. This picture book written by Jane Clarke, illustrated by Britta Teckentrup and published by Nosy Crow shows us how hard fitting in can be when you look different than the rest of the crowd. also shows us acceptance.

With vivid illustrations and fun, chatty prose, Neon Leon is a great picture book, especially for readalouds and story times. Perfect for my 4yo.

I was looking for a children's book that featured a chameleon. Bonus points that the chameleon is named Leon, since that is my son's middle name. Other than that, the artwork is fun and the colors are bright. My son seems to enjoy it!

I was surprised to see that someone else wrote a book about a chameleon named Leon who has a hard time fitting in because he doesn't change colors to blend in like the other chameleons. I was suprised to find that this wasn't a retelling of that story but instead a different "original" book. Melanie Watt's delightful book Leon the Chameleon, is out of print in hardback so I guess I will look into getting this one.

I picked this up for use in my preschool classroom because I thought the illustrations were fun and could make a fun art project. Unfortunately, the lesson is so bad in this book, we will not be using it. The idea that since he's different he should find someone "like him" is so bad. This book could have been such a nice story about acceptance and fitting in despite your differences. It's unfortunate.

First, this story is obviously pulled from the children's book 'Leon the Chameleon' written in 2003.

Second, the lesson being taught in this book is plainly "If you are different, you will not be accepted, so stick with your own kind".

The only reason this book gets one star is because the illustrations are nicely done.

I bought this book as my family loves chameleons. The illustrations are nice and colourful however I'm not really sure about the message it gives to the reader. It's quite negative and we thought it basically says 'you won't be happy as yourself, only if you fit in with others that look the same!'
