Purchase options and add-ons
Ever since she could remember, Violet and her mother have been locked away in a tower by the evil Queen Bogdana, who has the kingdom under her spell. The queen has all she wants except one thing-beauty. Violet possesses this beauty. She also has a secret: though she is very small, both her spirit and her heart are mighty.
When Violet is summoned by Bogdana to start training to become a real princess, it seems like her life might be taking a turn for the better. But hope quickly fades when Violet's mother is expelled from the castle and they're forbidden to see each other ever again. With everyone's lives in the balance, it's up to Violet to break the spell and reunite her family.

Even though the winters are long and cold and Violet is forced to eat stinky eggs her imagination takes her far away. Some days she's a princess, some days a pirate but thought it all she has her mother by her side to love, teach and pretend with her. They also have their dream of someday escaping from the bleak tower and the evil queen who imprisoned them, finding Violet's father, and traveling the world together.
But the queen has other plans for the rare child with black hair and violet colored eyes.
It seems the queen might not be so wicked after all when she declares Violet will be freed from the prison and elevated to princess, until she learns her mother will no longer be allowed by her side. With Violet's father cast under a spell and her mother is banished, Violet will have to out smart the women who has held her captive and break the spell before her family is lost forever.
I thought this was a sweet fairy tale, great story for younger readers. There were a handful of gorgeous illustrations throughout the book and though the story line was simple it had heart. I liked how the adults in the book were all kind to the girl and most were fantastic role models. The evil queen was selfish and could be nasty but not anything that would terrify readers and even with her wickedness she was kind to Violet in her own selfish way. All in all in was light, breezy story with a happy ending fit for a princess (or a pirate, depending on the day).

I started reading this book and couldn’t put it down until the end. It was sweet as well as funny and Violet was endearing. I loved how she looked at the world. She was a prisoner, but she never let that fact break her spirit.
I liked her mother Nuri, and the servants George and Maggie. Queen Bogdana was evil without being scary to read about for young children. The illustrations were fun to see. The characters all looked younger than you expected, but the almost whimsical feel fit very well with the story.
It has the fairytale feel to it, without most of the darkness. The twist at the end was unexpected to me, but made total sense with the rest of the story. I liked the descriptions used in the book. Everything from the humming birds, to Violet’s fantasies of being a pirate at sea. They were vivid without being overly descriptive, and helped suck you into the story.
The book is filled with hopes and dreams, good triumphing over evil. While it was written for children, all age groups will find something to like. If it isn’t on your reading list yet, it needs to be.

Author Lisa Schroeder’s prose has an airiness to it that compliments Violet’s disposition, making this tale much lighter than some of its other fairy tale counterparts. What makes “The Girl in the Tower” even more special is the accompanying illustrations by Nicoletta Ceccoli. Her whimsical touch adds just the right amount of quirkiness and love.
