Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2009I see the first publication of this book was in 1972. I read it in 1979 and I had put this story in my mental rolodex. Until 2004 something happened and I realized the situation I was experiencing was like something I had heard or seen in . Immediatley I thought of this book. I don't know why this book has stayed with me. It is a great book and should be in your personal library.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2014My aunt gave me this book as summer reading when I was 11 years old (18 years ago). The very day she gave it to me I finished it. It was hard to put it down (except for when I was hungry). Although, I have forgotten what it was about, I never forgot the title of it because it made an impression on me back then. I plan on purchasing it and reading it again.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2013I read this book in high school and loved it. Over twenty years later, I am surprised to find it. This is a great book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2017I read this book in the early 70s after the author spoke at my elementary school in Washington, D.C.. The story always resonated with me. I sought out the book last year and was surprised to find a copy after all of these years. I still am j lasted by the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2005I am an 8th grade teacher and I read this novel with my 8th grade students and they loved it; so did I!! Initially, I wasn't too thrilled about the text because of the cover, but once I began reading the book I couldn't put it down. Many students were very interested in the book and proceded to read ahead of the class. The book deals with real-life problems that many teens and families face today. I honestly believe that any teenager or adult for that matter could benefit from this story. At the end of the story, I had my students change the ending and create other creative work for the book and they did a phenomenal job. I am glad that I decided to expose my students to this novel.
