The Stable Cat's Christmas Hardcover – October 3, 2017

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 26 ratings

One night in Bethlehem, a small, dust-colored cat returns to her stable to find that a Baby has been born in the night. As all the animals tell the cat about the gifts they gave the Christ Child, the cat sadly concludes that she is too little and powerless to give a gift to the King. But when the Baby shivers and the cat leaps into the manger to comfort him, she discovers that she can give the best gift of all herself. This timeless Christmas book celebrates the fact that everyone has a gift they can give the King, no matter their size or stature. Enchanting illustrations and a heartfelt message make this book a Christmas keepsake that can be enjoyed year after year.

Review

A small, plain, sand-colored cat tries to identify a gift to give the newborn child in the stable where she lives, having been told that the baby is a great king who will bring peace to all the world. After conversations with a dog, cow, and donkey, the cat finds the child shivering in his manger. She snuggles up against the baby and later discovers that everywhere the child had touched... were golden-orange stripes, making her the world's first tabby cat. It's a quaintly old-fashioned story, both in the tone of Vrba's narration (The little cat felt a bit sad, for she wanted to see this king) and in Yerrill's animal-focused paintings, which highlight their brushy fur and big, bright eyes. The message that everyone, even the very small, has a gift to share won't be lost on young readers. Ages 4-8. --Publishers Weekly

The pictures are SO adorable that I'm tempted to pet them...and the story is adorably sweet too. My 6-year-old granddaughter loves it!

I love this book. I love the artwork. I love the cat in this book. The cat is cute. I bought this book & the book gives me a feel of the 1st Christmas. The cat is trying to give the Baby Jesus a gift. The other animals have given Jesus a gift, but the cat can't think of what gift to give the Baby Jesus. The only thing that the cat could do was keep the Baby Jesus warm from the cold. I picture cats & nativity scenes go well together. I have a couple of other Christmas book with cats at the nativity scene.

I recommend this book a good Christmas present to anyone you know who loves cats. I recommend this book as a wonderful gift to give to a child on Christmas. A child would love this book as a Christmas gift.

I recommend this book to anyone you know who loves cats. I recommend this book to a little boy or little girl who loves to read, who loves cats & who loves Christmas. It's a perfect book to read to your child at bedtime, especially on Christmas Eve. I recommend buying this book. I love it & I guarantee you'll love it. too. Two thumbs up!

Such a precious story to remind us all that sometimes our smallest gift can be the greatest! I can't wait to read this with my preschool students. It's easy to read and with all the animals will defiantly keep them engaged!

What a beautiful story to share with your little one, right from the beginning of their young lives, to show that giving of yourself is the way to live their life.
This wonderful Christmas story that features a cat, and then shows how each of the stable animals contributed in some way to give to the new King.
A real treat in the end is showing the kitties stripes, and while the story is geared to preschoolers through 3, my 5th grader seemed to love this book, of course I think the cover drew him in, it is perfect.
I received this book through WorthyKids/Ideals Publishing, and was not required to give a positive review.

I initially had trouble finding this book to review because my youngest (7) had absconded with it. He had been sleeping with it in his bed for about a week before I found it when I changed his sheets. That was one point in its favor. Then I had Frances (14) read it to her brothers before bedtime and afterwards they all ran off to find Oscar because he has stripes like the cat in the story. That was another point in its favor. When Henry (10) left my room that night he gave me a hug and thanked me for letting them read "such a sweet story." And that, my friends, means this book scored a perfect rating with my family and I think it will with yours!
