My Preschool Board book – June 18, 2019

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 37 ratings

Join a happy little boy during a day at preschool, from cheerful hellos in circle time, to painting colorful pictures and playing at the water table before snack time. The best part of saying good-bye at the end of the day is that the little boy knows he will come back tomorrow.

In her signature style, Anne Rockwell captures a child's preschool day (the bumps and the thrills!) with warmth and reassurance.

We bought a few of this type of book before my daughter started preschool this fall, and this is her favorite. She will be 4 in a few months and this seemed to be about the right level for her to think about the different things they would do and issues that would come up. I think it would be very appropriate for a 4-year old starting 4-K as well. The book is very observational, nonjudging about why the kids in the class might do certain things, which helps open up some discussion. Ex: Melissa cries every day "I don't know why." So we talked about how some kids might cry especially the first day and why that might be. (Spoiler, Melissa also always cries at the end of the day because she doesn't want to leave) It's also general enough for her to understand that not every preschool is exactly the same. Ex: The music teacher comes and they sing Old MacDonald, "Or sometimes we sing another song."

We also bought Maisy Goes to Preschool: A Maisy First Experiences Book and I personally like them about equally, but my daughter tends to choose the My Preschool book to read more often. The Maisy book is more simple and better for the slightly younger preschooler.

Great book to prepare your little one to go to school. Read it to my 3 year old all summer before starting in the fall & it got him excited to go to school. Well written, pictures kind of a messy outside the lines style that appeals to that age. Great emphasis on mama coming back for them at end of day. Too bad daddy does that in our family, but still works ok. Highly recommend.

This book is so cute. I was looking for a book to give my daughter in anticipation of her first day of preschool, so I ordered this one and another. I already own Anne Rockwell's kindergarten book (for when that day comes), and thought this would be a perfect way to start preschool for my daughter. When it arrived, I was struck by the simple language and the beautiful, bright, childlike illustrations. It's a gorgeous book, perfect for a little one starting preschool. The only problem I have with the book is that it mentions a couple of students who are having difficulties, and names them. For example, we learn that little Melissa cries every day when her mother leaves, and later see that little William knocks over other children's blocks. That's fine... unless your child is named Melissa or William. My son is named William, so we don't really need to give his older sister (who already is struggling with a new baby in the house) another reason not to like "William," and we don't need him reading this book when he starts preschool, either. I wish the author had used language that was more vague ("my friend cries" or "one boy knocks over blocks"). So, I'm going to give it away to another family. If you have a little Will or Melissa, and are looking for an alternative to this book, the other book we purchased (Preschool Day Hooray!) has a similar feel (classic, bright illustrations by Hiroe Nakota, who illustrated Snow Happy!, another favorite in our household).

Really helped my little boy understand more about the first few days of preschool. We read it several times the week before school started and the first week of school.

My favorite “just starting school” book for littles. It doesn’t start off with the premise that there are nerves and my daughter always picks up this authors books. It’s the perfect segue from board book comprehension to more involved stories.

My daughter cried for 3 weeks every time we brought her to preschool (she goes twice per week) until we read this book together. She loved hearing about the kids in this book and the heir reaction to preschool. She couldn't understand why Melissa cried when her Mommy dropped her off at preschool and cried when her Mommy picked her up from preschool. That is... Until she finally enjoyed her first day of her own preschool.

I highly recommend this book for any preschooler or kid who will be starting preschool. It's a great way to get your kid's feet wet!

I haven't really read this, I bought this book so my younger sister could read it to her son.

My daughter absolutely loves this book. She just finished her first year in preschool when we borrowed it from the library and can completely relate to Frank's perspective at school. The great thing is this book facilitated questions about why each child felt a certain way. It helped my daughter become more sympathetic to those who are sad for various reasons or at least gain some understanding too. She also told me what she has experienced at school first hand.

As a summary this book talks about a girl who cries at the beginning (drop off) and end of school (pick up), a classmate who is mad/frustrated, teacher intervening to apologize, children who love doing certain activities (water table, yoga, story time, paint), playing at recess and having snack.

For an entire month my daughter requested my husband and me to read this at story time each night. We also love the colorful illustrations and highly recommend this to all toddlers entering or finishing up preschool.

This is a great little book to help your little ones understand what it means to go to preschool/ nursery. My little one loves it! I would recommend this as a good introduction as to what nursery is all about. It's very simple in its text. Good pictures as well.
