I bought this for my best friend’s 18 month old, and red shoes to match. The book is well written & illustrated, and the message is very sweet.

My daughter loves shoes, so i bought her this book. it is a beautiful story and she loves it! she asks me to read it again and again. i highly recommend it and enjoy reading it to her as well. a must-read for any young child. it encourages them to think of what happens when they may outgrow their favorite shoes. could also be great to read to understand if they are upset about having to donate/give away something else they no longer need/use/fit. it will be sad for them, but make someone else very happy!! and your shoes can travel across the world like in the story!

My daughter and I very much enjoyed this book. She’s five now and is growing like a weed so she has to pass down a lot of her clothing to her friends and Family friends. For the items she loves so much she doesn’t want to part with them this book helped her understand that the shoes continue making other people happy, so she felt like the shoes were going to be loved again.

The story is darling and it has diverse characters!
Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2023
I want to first start off by saying I picked up this book to read with my 4 year old girl because I often pick up picture books with diverse characters. I deeply appreciate a great living book. The illustrations in this book were absolutely amazing. We are a multi-cultural home, Latina/East African and it’s always nice seeing colored characters. We thought it started out well and it was so cute seeing Malika and her Nana, but I was honestly so shocked about what would happen next. I was absolutely not expecting the Red Shoes to go to Africa the way they did. Honestly, this story line is low key offensive with its depiction of Halima as a poor African girl who inherits used red shoes. This story unfortunately and honestly even maybe accidentally… continues to spread the harmful narrative and stereotypes in America that Africans are mostly poor and can’t afford to get their own shoes. I never want my daughter to view Africans as poor, needy, and inferior to an American. I would never want my daughter to view the people from her Fathers home this way or her father especially being we go so often. The author could have left it as a donation, but again, I feel it was a poor choice to use an African girl as the recipient. Please understand this is just my opinion and I just feel saddened by this book because we had high hopes. I get what the author was trying to do, but, I would not personally recommend to anyone.
