Jennifer A. Nielsen, award-winning author of A Night Divided and Rescue, artfully weaves together the stories of five kids living through World War I, each of whom holds the key to the others' futures... if they are lucky -- and brave -- enough to find each other.

"A powerful, absorbing story that shines a light on an often overlooked chapter in human history." -- Alan Gratz, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Refugee

World War I stretches its cruel fingers across Europe, where five young people, each from different backgrounds and nations, face the terror of battle, the deprivations of hunger, and all the awful challenges of war.

Felix, from Austria-Hungary, longs for the bravery to resist Jewish deportations before his own family can be taken.

Kara, from Britain, dreams of someday earning her Red Cross pin and working as a nurse -- or even a doctor.

Juliette, of France, hopes her family can remain knitted together, despite her father's imprisonment, as the war's longest battle stretches on and on.

Elsa, from Germany, hopes her homing pigeon might one day bring her a friend from out of the chaos.

And Dimitri, of Russia, wants only to survive the front, where he's been sent with no weapon.

None of them will find exactly what they want. But the winds of fate may cross their paths to give each of them just what they need. And in this remarkable exploration of World War I by critically acclaimed author Jennifer A. Nielsen, they will discover that friendship and courage can light the way through the most frightening of nights.

I loved that this taught my son and I more about this time period

I loved that this taught my son and I more about this time period
I loved the way the author wrote this one. She wrote it about 5 young people during the first world war. I loved the way the book helped me to understand a bit more about this time period. As well as my son who I read the book to.This book is split into sections. Each section follows a different one of the young people. So the reader gets to see what they thought about the whole of the war. It starts from the very beginning when Felix witnesses the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. And it goes through the end of the war.I loved the way these 5 characters each had their own story. But the stories were connected. And there were different things that happened to each of them. Kara was a nurse's helper on a Red Cross train. That was one thing I had never heard of. But I loved her story.Juliette was a young French refugee. All alone in the world. She was trying to stay away from the Germans and find her family at the same time. It's hard to imagine how scary the world would have been for her.Elsa lived in Germany. I loved the way she knew her pigeon could help those around her. I loved the way she tied several of the characters together. And it showed the cruelty of a desperate people. And then there was Dimitri. His story is one of sadness. Dimitri wasn't old enough to be in the army, but he was forced there all the same. Leaving his family behind in the turmoil of a Russian revolution.I loved the things this book teaches about working together. And that we're all connected in one way or another.

This is my first book by Jennifer. As an adult, I think more adults would benefit from this. It teaches you at its core to see things from other peoples perspectives. I look forward to reading more.

Jennifer Nielsen has a clever way of weaving together the different stories for each character that end up connecting to each other. The beauty of it is that she takes on the perspectives of several characters experiencing WW1 in very different ways, and comes up with something that allows young readers to realize that underneath, even in war, people are really not so different after all.

Love that it was about WW1 because more books tend to focus on WW2

We read this with several 4th and 5th graders. It has some mature and descriptive content about the realities of war, so may not be suited for kids any younger than that.

This author has such a beautiful way of bringing history to life while entertaining young readers!
This book is an excellent way to understand World War I better while focusing on what is important: individual souls and how they handled it with courage and other virtues. I love the way the characters from many different countries are connected in this story. I had the thought that perhaps the author could write a sequel carrying into the next World War, and showing how these characters and their children continue to carry the torch...

This is the third Jennifer Neilson book I have read and I intend to read all of hers. As a military historian I am most impressed with the attention to historic detail as the backdrop to the stories. This book is about a group of adolescants from widely different cultures, all caught up in the same nightmare of WW1 and how their lives become linked. Jennifer's books have an easy flow to the writing, which makes it easy to get into and the stories are fast moving. I find it hard to find fault with this book, if it is read as it was intended. Recommended for al lages 12 and up.
