Shinji Takahashi and the Mark of the Coatl (The Society of Explorers and Adventurers) Hardcover – April 26, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
"One cannot fight destiny, boy. Even if one did not ask for it. The idol calls for you, and you must answer its call..."
Shinji Takahashi is just an ordinary kid. An ordinary homeschooled smart-alecky kid being raised by his globe-trotting aunt Yui. But when a magical guardian decides to use him as a conduit to awaken its power, Shinji’s life takes a turn for the anything-but-ordinary. Captured by the menacing Hightower Corporation, which is bent on using the guardian’s magic for its own nefarious purposes, Shinji must team up with a brilliant young tech whiz named Lucy and her robot mouse, Tinker, in order to escape.
Together the two turn to the venerable Society of Explorers and Adventurers and its ragtag cast of spelunkers, hackers, mapmakers, pilots, and mythology experts (among other things) to return the guardian to its rightful home and release Shinji from its magic―which seems to be draining his life force. Time is ticking, the Hightower Corporation is in hot pursuit, and success or failure might depend on one small thing―Shinji finally coming around to the belief that he is anything but ordinary.
Based on the Society of Explorers and Adventurers lore that exist across the Walt Disney Parks, Shinji Takahashi and the Mark of the Coatl is the first book in an all-new action-adventure series that brings S.E.A. into the twenty-first century through a blend of science and magic.

About the author
Julie Kagawa, the New York Times bestselling author of the Iron Fey and Blood of Eden series was born in Sacramento, California. But nothing exciting really happened to her there. So, at the age of nine she and her family moved to Hawaii, which she soon discovered was inhabited by large carnivorous insects, colonies of house geckos, and frequent hurricanes. She spent much of her time in the ocean, when she wasn’t getting chased out of it by reef sharks, jellyfish, and the odd eel.
When not swimming for her life, Julie immersed herself in books, often to the chagrin of her schoolteachers, who would find she hid novels behind her Math textbooks during class. Her love of reading led her to pen some very dark and gruesome stories, complete with colored illustrations, to shock her hapless teachers. The gory tales faded with time (okay, at least the illustrations did), but the passion for writing remained, long after she graduated and was supposed to get a
real job.
To pay the rent, Julie worked in different bookstores over the years, but discovered the managers frowned upon her reading the books she was supposed to be shelving. So she turned to her other passion: training animals. She worked as a professional dog trainer for several years, dodging Chihuahua bites and overly enthusiastic Labradors, until her first book sold and she stopped training to write full time.
Julie now lives in Louisville, Kentucky, where the frequency of shark attacks are at an all time low. She lives with her husband, an obnoxious cat, an Australian Shepherd who is too smart for his own good, and a hyper-active Papillion.

This is a great first stepping stone for SEA and I cannot wait to read the other book that has already been published.
Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2022
“The Mission of the Society of Explorers and Adventurers is to collect, conserve, and curate valuable cultural and artistic artifacts from around the world and to make them available to the public in an artistically pleasing and sensitive manner.
It is furthermore the mission of this organization to equip and mount socio-cultural expeditions to discover, explore, chronicle, and protect the artistic achievements of human society, past and present, exalted and forgotten.”
The mission seems to have changed in this book to include apologizing for the founders collecting artifacts to display in the museums, returning artifacts, protecting environment, making corporations the antagonist, all the usual liberal stuff that Disney is prone to of late. But its suble and not preachy where it takes away from the story. Its just sprinkled here and there to give an eye roll because it is forced into the story and doesn’t flow naturally.
This book felt a lot like the sequel trilogy of Star Wars having a new generation of characters in a later era striving to capture the same spirit of the lore from the original. But to be fair this book was targeted to middle schoolers and had to be relatable to them. However I remember very fondly as a middle schooler enjoying The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and the many Indiana Jones choose your own adventure book. So I’d argue you don’t need to be contemporary in order to appeal to middle schoolers. This book could have been done around the original era.
I was hoping it would have more of the original SEA characters in the book. While some of them are mentioned we don’t really get to meet them. I’m just afraid that as Disney expands on the SEA lore its going to make much of the luster go away. Part of the fun of SEA are the vague details, the obscurity, having to use imagination to fill in the blanks. The people that know of SEA really get into SEA. Its a nice little niche right now so not many know of it. But as it gets more commercialized I’m afraid its going to run away from them and will be another IP ran into the ground through its dilution.

This adventure-driven story fits quite well into the Rick Riordan canon of tales both in its captivating storytelling style and overall global perspective. Instead of focusing on one culture, however, this story does an excellent job connecting several different cultures from around the world into a pulse-pounding narrative. Throughout the novel, Shenji Takashi must determine where the truth is really found while learning how to trust himself in the absence of his family. Despite an innate desire to trust those he encounters, he seeks evidence in each circumstance to prove the loyalty of his companions. Shenji has many people alongside him throughout his journey, but he is the only one who places his needs as the primary focus. As all young teenagers experience the transition from being dependent on others to being self-sufficient, so too does Shenji grow in his capacity to care for himself.
Readers who enjoy global storytelling and a high-stakes mystery will easily fall into Shenji’s story and its myriad destinations. The adrenaline-packed storytelling is deeply immersive, using vivid imagery to bring Shenji’s experiences to life for the reader. Pieces of Mesoamerican history are woven into mentions of Shenji’s Japanese background, African culture, and more, creating a dynamic tapestry that enhances readers’ background knowledge of human history from around the globe. Attentive readers will catch hints throughout the novel about how the story will unfold, but it is nonetheless a riveting ride. This is a superb series debut, and it is one that will keep readers waiting eagerly for the subsequent installments.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and I chose to leave this review.
