About the author
Growing up in north-west England and Germany, Anna wrote plays about talking animals and stories about inventive children, and drew on every available surface. She did an Art Foundation Course for a year before studying German Literature and Philosophy at Oxford University. Coming to London after uni, she got her dream job at Usborne Publishing writing books for children. Since 1998, she has written over a hundred books about all kinds of things, from the wonders of the natural world to stories of curious penguins and inventive children. Some have won awards, many have delighted children all around the world, and she is as thrilled with her job now as ever.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2015My daughter, a five year old kindergartener, is learning to read, and her only "homework" for school is to read 60 minutes per week. The problem is that it is nearly impossible to find easy readers that are, in fact, easy to read, but that simultaneously engage a five year old. She isn't interested in the small, flimsy book sets with line drawings; they don't seem like "real" books to her. Yet nearly all of the early/easy readers we have (a wide variety of leveled readers from all different series and publishers) include more than a few words that are far too difficult for a new reader, words that "break" the rules that she's learning or that are impossible to sound out with simple letter sounds, like "knock" or "school." This leads to frustration and confusion.
The Usbourne Very First Reading series is far and away the best set of easy readers that I've found. They use rhyming text and phonics rules, so that the stories can be read without frustration. The idea is that the adult reads the text on one page, and the child reads the word, phrase, or sentence on the facing page (printed in larger, bold type which is easy to read). Each book in the series tackles a certain phonics rule, and the books build on one another Level 2 is just barely more difficult than Level 1, Level 3 one small step beyond that. The stories are fun and amusing, the pictures are engaging, and the method is one that is encouraging to young readers, rather than frustrating. My daughter has read this and other books in the series again and again, and I've seen her reading skills grow through this method. I would highly recommend Double Trouble and the other books in the Usbourne Very First Reading series to anyone

- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2018I purchased this book to read to my 4 year old identical twins. No one can tell the elephants apart so they paint themselves different colors until a naughty monkey washes away the paint and they are identical again. My twins can very much relate to the elephants in this story. I just wish there was a little more substance to the story. It is a very short read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cute
High quality hardcover book and cute little story for first readers. Could have been a bit longer for my taste especially since the reading parts for the child are very short but that's probably because it's the very entry level of the series :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reading book
Excellent story line both our 4 year old and 2 year old boy love this book. The format whereby the parent reads a bit and the child reads the next section works really well for our 4 year old as a way to encourage him to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent first reader.
Our grandchildren love this. The 'phonics' is simply a return to how we were taught to read during the war. It worked then and its return is long overdue.
