Companion to I Am Love and I Am Peace
“An age-appropriate and hopeful look at what it means to be a connected human on this planet.” ―School Library Journal
Being human means we are full of possibility. We learn, we dream, we wonder at the world around us. But we also make mistakes and can feel fearful or sad.
From the bestselling team that created I Am Yoga, I Am Peace, I Am Love, and I Am One comes a new hopeful celebration of the human family. A colorfully and warmly illustrated book for young children, I Am Human affirms that we can make good choices by acting with compassion and having empathy for others and ourselves.
A child in a red-striped shirt and blue jeans explores the possibilities open to them as a human being. Beginning with “I was born. A miracle! One of billions but unique!” the text lists activities (“I am always learning”; “I have BIG dreams”). The child explores the difficult sides of being human, such as feelings of fear and sadness. They can “make choices” and “move forward” with “thoughtfulness” (for example, giving flowers to a friend they hurt), learning to live with kindness, compassion, listening, and connection. “I am full of hope. I am human.”
When we find common ground, we can feel connected to the great world around us and mindfully strive to be our best selves.
Includes a guided meditation.

Review
"Verde brings it all together in the end with the connectedness of humans to each other. The clear and concise text is well-matched by Reynolds’ familiar illustrations in which viewers follow an unnamed boy of color (born on page one) on his human journey . . . An age-appropriate and hopeful look at what it means to be a connected human on this planet."―School Library Journal

About the author
Susan Verde grew up in a brownstone in the heart of Greenwich Village in New York City with her older brother Michael. She spent much of her time as a child clad in bell bottoms and rainbow suspenders, roller skating up and down her block with a skate key around her neck and a piece of chalk in her pocket (for spontaneous hopscotch).
Susan’s household was filled with books, music and the smell of mocha chip pies, which her mother made for their neighborhood restaurant. Susan often wrote stories and poetry to share with family and friends and even her high school poetry magazine. Susan’s love of literature began in utero (according to her mother) and never dwindled. She can, to this day relate very well to Amelia Bedelia.
Ultimately, she moved to the Hamptons and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s in reading remediation and become an elementary school teacher at a private school in Bridgehampton. She has also participated in the Southampton Children’s Literature Conference at Stonybrook University.
Although no longer a school teacher, Susan is a certified kid’s yoga instructor which allows her to frog jump and wag her tail in Downward facing dog with great frequency.
Currently, Susan lives in East Hampton New York amidst an explosion of Legos, art supplies, and picture books with her twin boys Joshua and Gabriel and her daughter Sophia. They are the constant inspiration for her writing. They never let her forget how to see things from a child’s point of view and keep the kid in her alive and kicking.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2024This board book is great and should be part of every library. Especially great for kids of all ages. This is one of those books that every child should own. It should be in lobbies and offices wherever children go to wait. It should be in every child's classroom. After reading it you might want to get a copy for every little kid you know. And once you fall in love with this one, you might check out her other books too. (Or maybe you already have.) So good. Happy, sweet, meaningful, joyful, delightful books to make anyone smile and feel all warm n cuddly.
This book and the others in this line are THE books. You won't be disappointed. The board book format is awesome.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2018Optimistic and a winner; this book will leave your little one feeling comforted. And whether you read it during the day or as a bedtime story, I think you might be rewarded with a little smile. It’s a book about being connected and all the good things that a human can do and feel. And it’s an acknowledgement that yes, everyone feels sad sometimes, or maybe makes bad choices sometimes. But we can always start to make good choices and turn things around. And it celebrates being human.
This book is simple and delightful. It’s for ages 4-8 and the odds are good your little one will want to read it over and over again. Yup, it’s one of those. The whimsical pictures by illustrator Pete Reynolds make exploring each new page a fun discovery, and author Susan Verde infuses the book with cheerfulness.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2020Amazing message. This series of three books have helped soothe this mama's heart for sure. And I can't imagine how powerful it would have been had I been read these books as a child. So reassuring to basic human emotions and needs, but also shows clear examples of how to help others in their time of need. It also highlights how we can accidentally hurt those around us without even noticing. I think this is a critical book to read to young children, and to read it very often so the message resonates. Definitely check out the rest of the I Am Human books! The illustrations that go along with it are so beautifully detailed. Have gifted this book to several friends with littles, who have reached out to say how truly touching this book was for them. Great bonding opportunity
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2023As a school counselor I needed something that would show a student that they are only human. That they are not alone and to practice self-compassion. Had it one day and already used it twice.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2019I am absolutely in love with this book, it has become my absolute undisputed favorite. You have a kid to celebrate? You get this book. You’re one of my preschoolers? You get this book for your end of year gift. You are a future teacher? Here’s your gift when you get that license no matter the age you plan to teach. I have purchased over 30 copies of this book to give to others because I find it to be that special. The illustrations are beautiful and interesting for kiddos to look at. The message on each page is so SWEET and teaches young ones about being human. I hope my students carry these messages with them through their entire lives. Seriously, the sweetest book in the world. Love love love.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely illustrations
A nicely bound book with good illustrations. I'd purchased it for my 5-year-old, she found it a bit difficult to understand as the story is quite abstract for her age. However, it does open to door to conversations about feelings and motivation when one's low. Lots of questions follow each page.
It's on the shelf and we read it from time to time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book
I am loving this book. I think it is important these days to teach our children that perfection is not a thing and it is normal to make mistakes sometimes. I give 5 stars for the book. However the book I received was all dirty and stained on the cover. It's a bummer to receive a brand new item in such condition.
I would not necessary put on the cover: A book of Empathy.
