About the author
Valerie Bolling has been an educator for 30 years and a writer since age 4. She is a graduate of Tufts University and Columbia University, Teachers College.
Her nieces inspired her to write picture books, and she wants children of all backgrounds to see themselves in her stories and feel seen and heard, valued and validated. Valerie's debut, LET'S DANCE!, won SCBWI's Crystal Kite award. Since then, she has added five more picture books (Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection I SEE COLOR; Kirkus Prize Finalist TOGETHER WE SWIM; TOGETHER WE RIDE; RIDE, ROLL, RUN: TIME FOR FUN!; and BING, BOP, BAM: TIME TO JAM!) and a Scholastic Acorn early reader series, RAINBOW DAYS. - Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2023After school, kids feel a release, and let their energy explode as they "ride, roll, run." In sparse rhyme, the author captures the feeling of being outside moving on skateboards and jungle gyms, with balls and drawing on the sidewalk, and making music to name just a few of the actions described. The illustrations are vibrantly colored and also elemental but make you feel the action of the kids who are of different hues. One child is in her wheelchair participating in everything. One child wears a hijab. This book reflects what happens in my neighborhood playgrounds in Dorchester. A fun read.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2023What a fun read aloud this book is. My grandkids love hearing it read aloud and have begun to say the words with me -- of course, even the title "Ride, Roll, Run" is fun to say! The book has sparked fun conversations with them, encouraging them not just to listen and look at the gorgeous illustrations but to participate as well. We talk about the ways kids move, about wheeled vehicles, and what other ways kids can ride and roll that aren't in the book (like surfboards.) The grandkids - and I - love this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2022The vibrant and diverse children in this story engage in a wide variety of games and activities after leaving school. Hopscotch, skate boarding, bicycling, jumping Double Dutch, and playing basketball are just a few of the activities that keep them engaged. The author’s sparse rhyming text and the illustrator’s bold color choices make this a beautiful picture book that children will want to read over and over. My hope is that the text will also spark conversations among children, parents, and grandparents about the specifics of how to participate in these games and activities. In that way, a new generation will have ideas for what to do when It’s Time for Fun!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2023This book encourages the young, the old, and everyone in between to get outside and enjoy life. You can even chant the words on your way out the door!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2022A fun story that bridges the gap between young and mature audiences. How many don't recall the enjoyment of hopscotch, jumping rope, and many other outdoor games? A wonderful read for the whole family.
