About the Author

"DINO" DON LESSEM has written more than 50 books on dinosaurs and other animals for children and adults. He led the construction of the largest dinosaur skeleton, Argentinosaurus, and the largest meat-eating dinosaur, Gigantosaurus. Lessem was adviser on the movie Jurassic Park. He has hosted and written television documentaries. He creates museum exhibitions on dinosaurs and created the two largest charities for dinosaur research.

Artist FRANCO TEMPESTA specializes in naturalistic illustration with a specialty in realistic illustration of dinosaurs and primitive mammals. From 1995 to 2001 he taught illustration at the Palladio's Institute of Graphic Design in Verona, Italy. Tempesta is the 2016 recipient of the Lanzendorf PaleoArt Prize for 2-D art from the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. He has illustrated several books for National Geographic Kids.

Just noticed this book is missing several pages just like picture ..goes from 208 to 225. Going to go through entire book to see what other pages are missing. Duplicate pages 193 to 208. Guess I need to replace it. This is crazy bought for 2 and 4 year old grands so they did not realize.

We have had this book for several years now and we love it. We don't read it everyday anymore but use it as a reference and for random moments of interest. It is a keeper and my son loves it.

On the down side, there is one illustration we could have done without. I think it was a velociraptor and baby Dino just hatched...and there is blood dripping down the baby's head after the raptor cracked it with its beak. I mean, really. It freaked my kids out. It even made me uncomfortable. They could have drawn any number of other illustrations for that.

Aside from that, we do enjoy the book and just avoid that page bc it's creepy. There are a lot of good things about it- like the information and size comparisons to humans. There are lots of tidbits and it lists what fossils have been found for each Dino, which I find fascinating.

I def recommend it...just watch out for that page if your kids are sensitive to baby animals being eaten. Just saying. I'm picky about what books in willing to move every two or three years and this one is in my list of keepers.

My 8 year old son is a lover of all things dinosaur, but he is very picky about his dinosaur books. When he finds a dinosaur book he likes, he reads it over and over. He has come across a few books that have frustrated him if they have inaccuracies within a text, or the illustrations contradict the text of the book. So I was worried about ordering this book online without being able to preview it myself. This book is a hit with my son! He reads it every night before bed. The illustrations are colorful and the text is organized and not too busy. Each dinosaur name includes a pronunciation guide which we all appreciate. This book is a Guided Reading Level S, which is a little challenging for my son despite his high reading skills. However, he enjoys reading the captions and side notes himself. Sometimes he will attempt to read the main text himself, or we will read it together. I would highly recommend this book for all kids who love dinosaurs.

I was debating between this book and "Dinosaur!: Dinosaurs and Other Amazing Prehistoric Creatures as You've Never Seen Them Befo (Knowledge Encyclopedias)" which is found also here on Amazon. I opted for this one because it looked just as interesting, and was slightly less costly.

When it arrived I was sure it would be a hit but ironically it wasn't, and furthermore the next day my son came home from the library with the other book I had passed over and proceeded to read that one, ignoring his new book I had just gotten for him! go figure.

That being said I don't know why he didn't like this one as well and he couldn't really give me a good explanation either...

This book is really well done, had a lot of great photos and information but maybe you might consider the other book knowing what my experience was. Still, I can't give it a bad review because it's a great book!

We started with the National Geographic first big book of dinosaurs and all the first big book series and read those several times. Then we bought this encyclopedia when she is 9 and she loved it. We read this one again several times with her, this time sometimes she read me and sometimes I read her. It's very explanatory for this age. Definetly a must-have for dinosaurs lovers. Great way of learning and encourages kids to read more and learn more. Highly recommend.
