When night falls, a family eases into supper, bath, and bedtime. But while their day is ending, their farm cat’s adventures have just begun! Review
Ever wondered what a pet sees? In this reillustrated version of her 1988 original, authorillustrator Wolff shows the world from a new perspective as she invites readers to explore everyday life from a cat's point of view. In this story, the cat in question lives with a loving family of four on a farm. During suppertime, the family sees the meal setup while the cat sees the sheep outside the window. At nighttime, the family is preoccupied with bath time or storytime, while the cat is eager to venture outdoors. When everyone finally sleeps, there are more scenes that can't be missed. The illustrations, newly painted for this edition, depict a family of color in the warmth of their home. The text encourages readers to complete the sentence "So only the cat saw . . ." by filling in the blank with their observations. Add it to the roster of bedtime stories alongside Margaret Wise Brown and Jerry Pinkney's A Home in the Barn (2018). -- Booklist, Online Exclusive ― April 30, 2020

About the author
I write and illustrate children's books in a small studio on the shore of a Vermont mountain lake, where I enjoy four distinct seasons, birds, and wildlife. I grew up not far from here and my books reflect my absorption with the natural world. I have illustrated 70+ books and create artwork in a variety of media including linoleum block prints, watercolor, acrylic, and collage. I teach at Hollins University's certificate and MFA in Children's Literature and Children's Book Illustration. https://www.hollins.edu/academics/graduate-degrees/childrens-literature-graduate-program/

- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2020A gentle sweet story that is a delight to share with little ones. My now 30-something daughter loved it as a young child at bedtime. Now that it’s available again we are gifting it often. Gorgeous illustrations. Lovely book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2023Loved this book as a child, I can't wait to read it to my own child!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2021I first read this to my daughter, over 30 years ago. She loved it. Recently, we bought it again and read it to a friend's toddler. Another generation loves it! The lush illustrations and sweet story of a cat's night prowling around a farm are unforgettable.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2021The original publication from the 80s is a wonderful story! It’s been updated and was changed significantly in the 2nd edition—so I went to find the first edition and it’s so many memories of story time when I was little! The original artwork is so beautiful! My daughter loves it now as well—the kitty looks just like our fur baby!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2011Not only is this book gorgeously illustrated, but one of the pages depicts a mother happily nursing her baby. I cherish any book that solidifies nursing as normal! However the best thing about this book are the pages without text, left open for creative interpretation, teaching children how to use their own imagination! This book is superb.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2023The books were in good quality, especially for their age and I loved that one was signed by the author.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2013I had this book years ago and somehow, lost it. I remembered Ashley Wolff's name because of the weird spelling of the last name and thought I'd give Amazon a try! Sure enough they had it! I am delighted that I now have this book on my shelf again. It's a timeless book, a real keeper. Thanks for stocking it!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2006Besides the aspects other reviewers have praised (pleasingly simple storyline, beautiful illustrations, positive image of nursing), this is also a great new sibling book. The book does not explicitly address the baby's arrival or any sibling rivalry issues, yet it portrays a family successfully juggling two children. The parents take turns with various child care tasks, and everybody's needs are met -- what a warm image of how a new baby can be worked into a family's routines. My daughter (almost 3) enjoyed this book from the library several months ago, and now that she is a sister-to-be, we're buying our own copy. I want to prepare her for the baby's arrival, but I'm wary of overdoing it with new baby books; this subtle sibling book is a welcome addition to our collection.
