“Marvelous mouse-sized mischief for all ages.” —Booklist (starred review)

From the creator of the acclaimed and beloved Pokko and the Drum comes an emotionally resonant, “richly imagined” (The Horn Book, starred review) picture book about trust, worry, and loyalty between a father and daughter.

Mina and her father live in a hollowed-out tree stump on the edge of a pond on the edge of a forest. Nothing ever bothers Mina, until one day, her father brings home a suspicious surprise from the woods.

Should Mina trust her father—or listen to her own instincts?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2-Mina is a bookish little mouse whose peaceful solitude is often interrupted by her irrepressible father, who has a habit of bringing home "surprises from the outside world." When he brings home a truly shocking surprise, Mina can only respond with, "I don't think that's a squirrel." It is clearly a cat. As Mina's unease about cohabitating with a cat grows, her father brushes off her concerns. It is only after bringing home two more "squirrels," and seeking the advice of a doctor because they will not eat the proffered acorns, that the simmering tension boils over. Forsythe (Pokko and the Drum) delivers a wickedly humorous cat and mouse tale. Many young readers will identify with Mina, who is so obviously correct and so unjustly dismissed. Mina's father does not come off as cruel, simply too stubbornly optimistic to give credence to worry. Forsythe's wry, concise text is enhanced by stylized and whimsical illustrations in watercolor, gouache, and colored pencil. Mina and her father are drawn in a slightly abstract, minimalist style, which has the effect of making the more richly detailed cats seem all the more threatening. One indelible page pairs the text, "That night Mina couldn't sleep," with the image of a wide-eyed Mina and her sanguine father in their brightly lit bedroom, while the massive face of the smug cat looms over their beds, its dark body extending into the adjoining page, seemingly draining the light and color from around it. The visual storytelling is exquisite, drawing readers in to search for the small details, such as the direction of a character's gaze, that tell the real story. The book as a whole is engaging, perfectly paced and full of controlled suspense and biting humor. VERDICT This expertly crafted and delightfully quirky picture book is recommended for first purchase.-Elizabeth Lovsin, Deerfield P. L., ILα(c) Copyright 2011. Review

*Mina the mouse is used to her eccentric father bringing home random items from the outside world.... She is, however, a bit concerned when he brings home what is clearly a cat, though her father insists that it’s a squirrel and invites the furry feline to stay.... Amusingly dry storytelling gives a wispy plot some edge... The art really steals the show, especially the sly-eyed, oversized cat who looms over the pages with razor sharp claws and an expression that moves too comfortably between feigned innocence and determined menace.... Simple dialogue and stealthy repetition will boost a budding reader while some of the more sophisticated vocabulary will stretch their skills, and a surprise savior povides an opportunity for dramatic interpretation during a humorous read aloud. ― Bulletin for the Center of Children's Books -- * STARRED REVIEW*

*Matthew Forsythe brings to Mina a dry, droll humor and exquisite watercolor, gouache and colored-pencil illustrations. Patterns abound in the earth-toned pages: flower parasols, pack baskets, stylized butterflies, "antique art" (postage stamps). Mina's "obsessive reader" poses--on her belly on the floor, in a homemade tent, in bed, on her back, even on the back of the cat--will feel exactly right to every bookworm lucky enough to find this treasure.
Discover: A mouse named Mina must contend with the "surprise" her father brings home in this funny (for all ages!) picture book, beautifully illustrated and full of unexpected details. ―
Shelf Awareness, *STARRED REVIEW*

Soft, organic forms; fields of glowing color; and shadowy backdrops create a dreamy world in which Forsythe transforms the trying experiences of everyday life into a deliciously suspenseful fantasy. ―

*An unpredictable and uproarious tale, a pleasing blend of Forsythe’s (Pokko and
the Drum, 2019) trademark dry wit and obvious affection. The soft watercolor, gouache, and
colored pencil illustrations conjure a cozy, colorful world of snug burrows, clever details, and
terrific expressions. Marvelous mouse-sized mischief for all ages. ―
Booklist - *STARRED REVIEW*

*Mina ... is whip-smart and patiently suffers a well-intentioned but hapless parent. The illustrations [have] are also reminiscent of Pokko with their velvety textures; palette of beautiful coppers, crimsons, and forest greens; and warm glow that emanates from nearly every spread. More, please, of Forsythe’s richly imagined forest worlds. ―

Goodness, it’s been months since I posted a book review! Life gets in the way – and it’s easy for me to prioritize anything else (especially as a schoolteacher during the school year!). I haven’t abandoned books… but I have been reading them more slowly than expected. What better way to ease into reviewing again than to pick up an excellent picture book? Matthew Forsythe’s Mina is a vibrant, funny, and inventive tale for the younger set.

Mina the mouse lives with her father, and mostly doesn’t mind that his ideas are big and not always… wise. She distracts herself with books and things turn out alright in the end, after all! But when her father brings home a squirrel – something doesn’t seem right. And that’s because the squirrel isn’t a squirrel at all! The book's marvelous detail and silly-serious adventure dovetail nicely with an important message: trust your instincts!

Mina is a funny and beautiful picture book with a twist, featuring anthropomorphic animal shenanigans and delightful details that will entrance readers of all ages. The story is simple, and the text brief – most of the plot is revealed through Forsythe’s lush art. There are several jokes throughout that rely on visuals for the punchline – antique art (stamps) on the walls of the mouse abode, the “squirrels” Mina’s dad takes in are cats – and one or two jokes that are a silly fun in their juxtaposition (stick bugs with charismatic voices who have stolen Mina’s books!).

That art I keep mentioning is uniquely lovely. The mice (and various other foregrounded characters) are fairly flat, two-dimensional figures against more meticulous and light-filled backgrounds. Fosythe’s linework changes colors and has a textured feel. Each spread looks a bit like a marriage between Alice in Wonderland and Studio Ghibli, if they were created using only pastels. The real star of the show is the subtle lighting and shadow Forsythe plays with, to create variations and depth. It is a delightful read, and a feast for the senses.

In all, Mina is a fun and funny book — perfect for springtime, with a bright color palette and outdoor adventures. It is sure to please as both a read aloud and an independent read for six- and seven-year-olds.

Recommended for: storytimes with kids ages 4 and up, fans of Kate Read and Bethann Woollvin’s picture books, and anyone who enjoys beautifully illustrated volumes with a sense of humor.

We did not purchase this book but we did check it out from our library. We will definitely add it to our collection. My child is four and it’s their favorite book. They can recite the story from memory now. It’s not scary at all like another reviewer stated. The illustrations are wonderful!

Illustrations are amazing! The textures, shapes and colors!

The tension of the predictable storyline is surprisingly broken by a stick insect that saves the day by reading in such a way as to put the cats to sleep! I had to laugh out loud at the turn of events and the change in storyline from predictable to totally unpredictable! Loved it!

And of course, it bears mentioning again how amazing the illustrations are!
