A shift in perspective can change everything.

This brilliant novel from the author of The Seventh Most Important Thing celebrates kids who see the world a little differently.

April is looking for an escape from the sixth-grade lunch hour, which has become a social-scene nightmare, so she signs up to be a "buddy bench monitor" for the fourth graders' recess.

Joey Byrd is a boy on the fringes, who wanders the playground alone, dragging his foot through the dirt. But over time, April realizes that Joey isn't just making random circles. When you look at his designs from above, a story emerges... Joey's "bird's eye" drawings reveal what he observes and thinks about every day.

Told in alternating viewpoints--April's in text and Joey's mostly in art--the story gives the "whole picture" of what happens as these two outsiders find their rightful places.

I picked up this book on a recommendation from a friend and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was an easy read (for an adult) but totally kept my attention - I didn't want to put it down. Would be a great read for the 3-7 grade range with a very applicable topic. I enjoyed the premise with April, a 6th grader who spent time at the Buddy Bench during the 4th grade recess, to support any struggling students. One student, Joey, was a loner and had some curious behaviors that concerned April. I enjoyed how she broke through his reserve and got to know Joey and found his uniqueness. The story kept me turning pages and I enjoyed the epilogue where the author explained the inspiration for the story. Highly recommend.

Great story with wonderful messages about how it is important not to make assumptions about others and that there are different ways of looking at things to gain perspective. It also covers how one person really can make a difference and sometimes not even realize it...everyone’s life has meaning and touches someone else’s life. It emphasizes that everyone has something unique and special to offer and not to doubt that for a second. My son and I loved the book!

I have enjoyed and recommended Shelley's books,, especially The 7 Most Important Things to my friends and former colleagues. This book tugged at my heartstrings because her writing style was so true to a sixth grade girl's thinking.i truly appreciate books that are based on factual material and also deal with character traits sensitively. As a former 6th grade teacher, I thoroughly enjoyed this book!!

Great book, but I had planned on my older homeschoolers reading it, and decided not to because of all the talk of homecoming, figuring out how to fit in, great comment box and comradierie at her school, which boy likes who, etc. The characters are 5th and 6th graders in the book - I'd say this is a good read for a 5th grade girl, which my kids are not, so just not a good fit, but great overall message.

Oh, where do I begin? Pearsall has written another meaningful, lovely, NEEDED middle grade novel in this book, Things Seen From Above.

I loved how April grew in the story from an outcast 6th-grader to a confident young lady who worked to better the folks around her. She helped to discover Joey, the young boy who makes incredible art that must be “seen from above.” She encourages Veena, a young Indian immigrant who needs a friend and a place on the Buddy Bench.

And I loved Mr. Ulysses, the kind-hearted janitor who gives an assist to all three main characters.

Just SUCH a good book!

Looking for a great read for yourself or for you kids? You've found it! This is an awesome story of a young man with a special gift and a friend who took the time to see it!! It's told from two different points of view, so as a teacher, this provided the opportunity for so many conversations ! I teach fifth grade, and my students LOVED the characters and more importantly the theme of this story!! I can't wait to read it again with my future students. Check out all of Shelley's stories, she really has a way with the details and drawing you in! I highly recommend this awesome book!

"I came to the conclusion a long time ago the people often see only what they expect to see. If they don't expect much, they don't see much." April Boxler is struggling to find her place in 6th grade - the only escape from the dreaded 6th grade lunch hour is volunteering to be a Buddy Bunch monitor for the younger kids. In this escape she learns the truth about an awkward 4th grade boy and the power in the shift of perspective. A beautiful coming of age story, this is a must read for elementary and middle-school readers.
