About the Author
They live with their two kids and one exquisitely talented cat (none of whom help with the dishes).
Ryan Andrews lives in the Japanese countryside, with his wife, two kids, and their dog, Lucky. A friendly Kodama or two have been known to take up residence in the giant acorn tree that shades the house. Ryan often works at his drawing desk in the early-morning hours, to the sound of rummaging wild boar and badgers, who come from the surrounding forest seeking out shiitake mushrooms and fallen chestnuts.

This book is unlike any other book you’ve ever read before. What’s written on these pages is happening right now. To you.
That’s right, you.
This book is about you and what you’re doing right now—but not what you think you’re doing and not where you think you’re doing it. It’s about another you in another world.
Confused? That’s natural. We don’t fully understand it, either. Scientists are still trying to get to the bottom of how one thing can be in two places at once. If you’re curious about how such things work, we encourage you to read up on quantum physics and then explain it to us.
But not now! You’re already too deep into this book. One hundred twenty words deep, to be exact! And now even more! But don’t waste your time counting words to find out if we can count or not—your life hangs in the balance!
Sorry, did we forget to mention that? Well, it’s true. The other world you are in right now is a bizarre and dangerous place. Nothing is as it seems. Survival is not guaranteed. It will take every ounce of your courage, wit, and luck to get back home in one piece.
Scared? Tempted to put this book down and never touch it again? We don’t blame you. It’s scary to be fighting for your life in a strange world filled with terrifying creatures and unbearable puns. But to that we say: Too bad. Deal with it. Someone has to do it, and that someone is you.
And this isn’t just a ploy to make you keep reading. Although that is a good idea. We wish we had thought of that. We can’t think of everything. What did you expect? Omniscient narrators? Hardly! We don’t know everything about everyone, but we do know what’s happening to you. And right now you need your help.
So go grab your pencil and keep it handy. You will need it. It just so happens that in this other world, a pencil is all you have to draw the line between life and death. We suggest you don’t use a pen for three reasons:
1) You have a pencil in this other world, so show some solidarity with yourself. If you don’t, who else will?
2) You may want to write incredibly gross, rude, or otherwise socially unacceptable things. We encourage you to do so, if you’re into that sort of thing, but you may want to erase the evidence, so no one knows what a sick mind you have.
3) You may want to write down your most ingenious ideas. It’s a good idea to be able to erase them in case the prying eyes of lesser minds want to borrow your brilliance without paying you for it.
Regardless, we’re out of time. The clock is ticking, and you’re about to wake up!

About the authors
"Probably the most talented writer of all time."
-Drew's Mom
Drew was born in Ohio to two people from Ohio. Since then, he has lived in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Ireland, and (currently) the Netherlands. He did this out of wanderlust, not to avoid paying taxes. He also managed to marry the woman of his dreams/writing partner, have a baby, and adopt a street cat who can do tricks like a dog.
Drew taught creative writing to kids in NYC and LA for over 10 years. During that time, he got to experience the wonderful absurdity of kids' stories. One day, he and Alana talked about how funny it would be if there were a place where all those stories came to life. MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD is the story of that place.
Alana found her mind about ten years ago. It had gotten lost in a very hard to reach, dangerous place. But that's another story altogether. The important thing is that shortly thereafter, she met Drew and they have entirely too much fun together. They love creating characters together, writing, reading aloud, being loud aloud, doing voices and making faces. If you're curious, none of those faces have stuck. Not even the really weird ones.
Alana's terrible at moving, but just to make sure of that, she's schlepped herself (as well as her baby, cat, husband, and luggage) to three different countries in the last two years. But she's still not as adventurous as her father, who managed to live in the real Amazon (not this website) for several years with only a canteen, a machete, and a treasure map. (But that's also another story altogether). Alana hopes to get to Ecuador some day and live in the jungle (in spite of being really terrible at moving).

- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2018I'm a teacher in South Korea. I was looking for a cool book that would fit a certain skill level and keep them engaged. My students loves drawing. And they enjoyed graphic novels I've chosen for class in the past. They liked books like Doode Adventures, Robot Dreams, Hugo Cabret, and the Graphic Adaptation of A Wrinkle in time. This was just as successful. The fact you can interact with the story is one perfect characteristic of this book. I've been wanting to include more of these Doodle style story books more and there just aren't many out there of quality. Second is the 2nd POV. That was a cool unique perspective that my students haven't had a chance to experience. Third, the story is really fun and has very creative and imaginitive parts, easy to follow, and is not too hard and not too easy. I loved this book and REALLY REALLY hope they can make more like this. If anyone out there has any recommendations to more books like this, please let me know! If I could make a book like this I would, but God knows I don't have time to do that quick enough.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2023I bought this book for my son who doesn't particularly enjoy reading. It's a silly book and he actually enjoyed reading it. I appreciated that it gets kids used to looking at footnotes, describes parts of speech and helps build their vocabulary.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2018This book is completely absurd and ridiculous, but in the best way possible. Loved the story, loved the interactivity (totally cheated and filled in various parts on post-it notes that I numbered and stuck in the back of the book so I can put them back where they go after my daughters have had their turns), appreciated the life lesson on taking shortcuts, and am really hoping my girls take the authors up on their invitation to send in alternate villains, because I'd like to see what they come up with. I would love to see this become a series.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2019Part mad libs and activity book plus fully developed fictional story, MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD is a delightfully interactive read for the middle grade audience. Told entirely in the second person, the book takes the reader through an adventure in which they are cast in the starring role. The reader gets to interact with the book by filling in the blanks, solving puzzles, and even drawing their version of a more or less scary villain.
In the land of Astorya, you are surrounded by fictional creatures with only your pencil. However, as you soon learn, that pencil is the most powerful of tools, as anything you write can become a part of the story too. After finding a letter calling for help, you set out on a quest to find out what happened to you and rescue Prince S. There's villains, magic, and more in this charming and funny story.
What I loved: This book is a pleasure to read and would do well in a classroom setting, where children can giggle and create together. The chapters could be easy to read a couple at a time aloud, with children filling in the blanks together or separately. There are plenty of activities that are a part of and/or could be derived from the book, making it quite interactive. The book is overwhelmingly a comedic adventure, so it will appeal to a broad audience.
Final verdict: Delightful, hilarious, and full of heart, this interactive book has great potential to appeal to young readers. I would put it on a similar level as the SIDEWAYS STORIES OF WAYSIDE SCHOOL but with fairy tale elements, mad libs, and puzzles. This book is perfect for middle grade (8-12yo) classrooms or solo reads, but I bet you'll want to talk about it!
Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2019This is a really fun and incredibly inventive book. The fantasy world it creates is clever and engaging and has lots of wonderful characters which the reader, who is the main protagonist, must understand and work with to win the day. It also has a sly sense of humor which will appeal to adults and children alike.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2019This book is simply brilliant and just as much fun for parents as for kids. Our six year old was so enthralled with the story, the characters, and his place at the center of the story that he did not want to put it down. Highly recommend!

- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2018What other book will make you make a drawing of a car that is a giant wolf head with its mouth open? The driver sits on the tongue and the lower fangs are the pedals. This is what Mightier Than The Sword did for me. So much fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved by my kids 9-14!
We had borrowed this from our local library and my kids were fighting to read it. After returning the book, I decided to buy one for keeps, and again, they’re fighting to read it. Got book 2 too and both books didn’t disappoint.
