From 1998 to 2008, she drew the internet comic strip Ozy and Millie. After winning the Amazon-sponsored Comic Strip Superstar Contest in 2009, Andrews McMeel Syndication signed her to a development deal for Heavenly Nostrils, which was later renamed Phoebe and Her Unicorn.
She currently lives in Santa Barbara, California, with her tech genius spouse and her fairly stupid cat.

About the author
Dana Claire Simpson grew up in Gig Harbor, Washington, drawing the entire time. She eventually graduated from the Evergreen State College, despite having spent all her time drawing, and not always for credit.
Attempts at doing real work along the way are hardly worth mentioning; the relevant fact is that, from 1998 to 2008, she drew the internet comic strip “Ozy and Millie.” After winning the Comic Strip Superstar contest in 2009, she developed the comic strip “Phoebe and Her Unicorn” (originally known online as “Heavenly Nostrils”), currently syndicated in around 200 newspapers.
There are a lot of "Phoebe and Her Unicorn" books, now! Some of them have been bestsellers and stuff. There are some "Ozy and Millie" books too.
Dana currently lives in Santa Barbara, California, with her tech genius spouse and her fairly stupid cat.

Nine-year-old Phoebe is still best friends with Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, a vain but well-meaning unicorn... but when you're friends with a unicorn, anything can happen. From discovering that Marigold floats when she's complimented to experiencing what it's like to be a unicorn via a VR headset, from discovering she actually has interests in common with her "frenemy" Dakota to growing a unicorn tail thanks to one of Marigold's spells, Phoebe's life is never boring. But what happens when the unicorns decide that Phoebe's friendship with Marigold is suspect, and put her on trial for the crime of NOT being a unicorn?
Dana's artwork is nicely stylized, cute yet detailed and reminiscent of a cleaner, more "cutesy" version of Bill Watterson's work on "Calvin and Hobbes." Backgrounds can be a little dull, but there's still plenty of detail and some fun visual gags for the reader to enjoy. Bonus points for actually giving the characters more than one outfit instead of resorting to the "limited wardrobe" of some comics.
After twelve collections of comics, some of the jokes in this series have gotten a little repetitive. Still, there's enough fresh comic material to keep it fresh, and it's nice seeing new sides to the characters -- especially Dakota, who's managing to have other sides to her personality than just being the stereotypical snob. It's unfortunate that Max gets very little page time and that regulars like Sara and Todd the Candy Dragon didn't show up, but it's nice to see Splendid Humility again at least.
"Virtual Unicorn Experience" is another fun entry in this series, and a delight for both kids and adults. I hope this series continues for awhile, and am eager to see where Simpson takes it next.
Although this title shares some similar jokes to previous ones, it follows unique storylines, uses familiar punchlines in new ways, and continues to develop the characters and their relationships. This book is incredibly creative, and of all of the comics and short narratives, my favorite is the story where Marigold gets called up for unicorn jury duty. Everything about this is hilarious. I love the illustrations, and the judge in his wig, and the dialogue, and all of the elements that I won't mention because of spoilers. It's FANTASTIC.
This book made me laugh out loud multiple times. It is a great choice for children, teens, and adults, and as always, it seems worthwhile to point out that my teenage brother has read all of these books as they have released. Even though the pink and sparkly cover makes this look like this is exclusively aimed at elementary-aged girls, this series is perfect for anyone who enjoys creative humor, witty dialogue, and fantasy entwined with everyday life.
“Phoebe and her Unicorn is a great book series. The book Virtual Unicorn Experience is one of the best ones. I thought at the beginning it was very interesting that Marigold had to say bad things about herself to keep herself from floating away every day! I thought that it was very amazing that it that she could float up high and make it a lot easier for nail polish, but I did wonder why they didn’t use that in the other books because they have had a lot of makeovers!
I think that they should’ve had more Dakota in it because she is a very interesting character with her magical hair and her goblins which is why it confused me that she was only in like three panels.
I think that is impressive that the author manages to take her daily strips and make them into a book. I think that it makes it more interesting and a lot funner to read!!”
