What happens when a one-horned calf with impeccable logic is convinced they’re a unicorn? Helen Yoon spins an endearing comedy of self-determination for gigglers everywhere.

“See?” cries the calf. “
Uni means one, and corn means horn!” Even their baby picture proves it: they were born with one horn! But as the eager little calf continues their research, a budding identity crisis arises when they realize they don’t quite check all the boxes—should a certain lack of moonlight sparkle or silky mane or rainbow poop decide the issue. Perhaps some unexpected encouragement from a pack of “real” unicorns might be just the assurance they need? Helen Yoon, the comic talent behind Sheepish (Wolf Under Cover) and the anarchic Off-Limits,returns with a clarion call for self-doubters everywhere to embrace who they are—unicorn or otherwise.

Read more hilarious stories by Helen Yoon! Help! This little girl has lost her best friend. He’s a dinosaur (not the extinct kind). He’s enormous (bigger than a panda!). He was last seen before she gave him a bath and washed off all the mud (maybe that wasn’t a good idea?) See?” cries the calf. “Uni means one, and corn means horn!” Even their baby picture proves it: they were born with one horn! But a budding identity crisis arises when they realize they don’t quite check all the boxes. Dad’s office is off-limits—which only makes it more intriguing to his curious young daughter. As soon as she sees an opening, she sneaks in to look around. After all, there’s no harm in just looking, right? What she discovers is a magical wonderland! Wolf dreams of tasty sheep! In his clever sheep costume, he infiltrates the friendly neighborhood herd. Wolf’s sneaky plan works so well, he becomes part of the family. And suddenly, the sheep don’t seem quite as tasty... It’s winter! For one spirited little puppy, winter means playing in the snow, birds to chase, evergreen trees, and joy, joy, joy! Then again, winter also means… oddly unfriendly deer? Millions of little lights? Inflatable snowmen? Wait, what?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2—Gr K-2 The narrator of this book makes an adorable entrance through the initial pages: first its horn, then its ears, then the top of its head before declaring "I'm a unicorn." But are they? While they have one horn, the rest of their features are decidedly bovine. Our poor narrator is thrown into a tailspin as they read a book about unicorns and realize they lack many of their typical features. However, a passing pair of unicorns declares that they can be a unicorn because they have one horn. The identity crisis is neatly settled. Yoon's artwork is vibrant and expressive. Her small protagonist may not be as sparkly as the other elegant unicorns, but they are chock full of personality. The traditional unicorns are sleek and beautifully posed. There are no backgrounds. The white space allows the reader to focus on the emotions of the large character illustrations. VERDICT While this book has all the tropes present in numerous unicorn books, the theme of personal identity may be enough to differentiate it from other titles in a large collection.—Chance Lee Joyner

Review

Yoon’s art is simple but effective, with the wide-eyed calf and their heavily tabbed research book set against clean white backgrounds, and when the unicorns finally make their appearance, they bring a riot of color and glitter. . . a reminder that you don’t need sparkles to be fabulous (though rainbow poop does help).
—The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books (starred review)

Clever. . . [a] conversation starter on acceptance and openness.
—Kirkus Reviews

Just when you think all the unicorn stories have been done, Yoon comes along with this gem. . . . White-page backgrounds amplify Yoon’s simple but highly expressive and hilarious illustrations, and kids will cackle throughout Cow’s dramatic emotional journey.

Sure, this unicorn might be a little short on sparkling, twinkling and having teardrops that turn into lollipops, but with a little help this one-horned wonder achieves its destiny, as a ... well, readers will just have to decide for themselves.
—The Virginian Pilot

This unique, humorous take definitely stands out. . . Along with some big laughs (did I mention the rainbow poop?) this book has a powerful message of openness and acceptance of differences.

We all know that baby showers have been requesting it's attendees to bring a book instead of a card to help build the little one's future library. As an early childhood educator - I LOVE that! That being said there are some books that you KNOW at least three other people will also be bringing (for example Good Night Moon - I have loved that book since childhood but that is a real common one that odds are someone else will also be bringing). That being said, if you want a book not a lot of people may even know about let alone be bringing to that baby shower you are attending, this is an adorable book about the struggle of self doubt. I signed the book with our names and wrote "Never doubt who you are, little one". A great book for everyone!

This book is hilarious and an absolute winner! My five year old loves glitter, rainbows and unicorns and we hit the jackpot with this book. Even my ten year old son was laughing and asked to read it again. We first found this at our library and loved it so much we ordered it. Best children's book I've read in a while.

With a heartwarming message about embracing individuality, this book creating a magical reading experience for toddlers. One of the benefits of this book is that it successfully encouraged my toddler to start eating apples, all thanks to the captivating concept of rainbow poop!

I saw this on TikTok just as my nephew was born. As a labor and delivery nurse, I know that sometimes getting an older sibling something from the new baby will help ease tension when they’re having a hard time adjusting. I got her this book to “read” to him, she’s 3, and she loved it! She loves the story and the imagery. Truly masterful and unique. I would recommend this to everyone!!

My son lost the library’s copy of this book and it was cheaper to buy them a new one than to pay what they wanted. This version was nicer than the one he lost too. So, thanks for saving me money!

What a great yet easy read! My 7 year old loves this story. It is a very easy to "act out" kind of read. Which makes it so much more entertaining.
